Festival Preparation Nearly
Completed; Selected Events Set
Preparations for Salem's fourth post-war Cherryland festival are
nearing a climax this week, with the new-type program of the annual
event set for next week, Thursday through Saturday, June 15-17.
More emphasis on fewer events is the keynote this year of plan
ning under Sidney L. Stevens, festival association president The pro
gram will include a queen's ball and two other dances, carnival, a
community wide jpageant oi nog
ress each night, children's and
grand parades, drill teanir contest
dance revue and carnival;
Prime feature of the 1950 show
is the pageant an outgrowth of the
Salen Centennial pageant of 10
years ago. Though professionally
directed and produced, it will have
all local talent. More than 2,000
persons from numerous Salem or
ganizations of all typesiare re
hearsing for the episodes of the
area's history and development It
will be presented at the state
fairgrounds grandstand three
nights. '
First festival event will be the
public queen's ball Wednesday
night at Glenwood ballroom. There
will be street dancing each night
at Marion square.
The Paul Armstrong dance "re
vuette" will be given at 8 p.m.
Thursday and Friday, prior to the
pageant Coronation of Queen Nan
cy Miller of Salem will be at 8:25
p.m. Thursday. Both events will be
at the fairgrounds.
A carnival is to be at Marion
square -all during the festival.

Naval Cruise
Fifteen Salem area men will be
among 333 naval reserve trainees
who will embark June 17 from Se
attle aboard two destroyer-escorts
on a 28-day training cruise to Aca
pulco, Mexico.
The cruise will be the longest
in point of time since World War
II. Trainees, representing 22 north
west cities, will be granted liberty
to San Francisco, Santa Catalina
island, San Diego and Acapulco.

A director will be elected June
19; for the post now held by Ed
ward Majek. Tomorrow is the
deadline for filing and only Moore
has filed. Majek said Wednesday

Moore lives in Kingwood
Heights, has two children and is
president of the West Salem PTA.
He has3, been general secretary of
the local YM about two years.
Previously he was YM boys' work
secretary here, leaving to accept
a post with the Long Beach,
Calif., YM. He is a Willamette
university graduate.

Thomas Nicholi Mommsen, Ta
coma, Wash, a former state hos
pital employe in Salem, has ad
mitted to - a city detective here
that he passed two bad checks rec
ently in Salem and, .seven others
in Tacoma. ; - - v
' Mommsen was arrested Tuesday
after . a two-day Investigation.
Police held a warrant to arrest
another man who, it turned out
was not . even in Oregon at the
time the checks, which bore his
name, were cashed. A tip' from
thjs man, however, aided 'the de

Mommsen has signed statements
admitting cashing $15" checks at
the Salem Smoke shop, and at the
Allen Hardware company, both on

Federal bureau of Investigation
agents told city police Wednesday
that Mommsen also is wanted In
Seattle for questioning in connec
tion with some bad checks.
Mommsen is scheduled to appear
today in Marion county district

Flood-Area Evacuations
The governor H authorized to
order persons in flood-threatened
areas to move out, Attorney Gen
eral George Neuner ruled Wednesday.
Neuner added, however, that
sheriffs, police and other officers
of local governments do not have
authority to order such evacuations.
The opinion was requested by
the Oregon State Civil Defense
agency.
