Phone Rate Rise Dels lyetl '- The Pacific Telephone and Telegraph company's request for a $2,920,000 rate increase in Ore gon Was suspended Thursday by Public U t il ii t i e s - Commissioner George H. Flagg. Flagg's action is routine. The Scout Summer Camp to Open Gates July 9 Camp Pioneer, official summer camp pf the Cascade area Boy Scout council, will open its gates July 9 -toTthe first of an expected 500 scouts. The camp will operate for four separate weekly periods, closing August 6. Accomodations at camp will handle 100 scouts plus 30 Ex plorers or older scouts. For the first time the admit tance age limit for scouts has been lowered from 12 to 11 years. suspension order has to be issued before he can fix the date for a hearing on the increase. If Flagg hadn't have suspended the requested increase, then the increased rates would have be come effective yesterday. New this year also will be week long hikes for explorer scouts. They will make a 50-mile hike around the eight-lake basin with a new group making the trip; each week. . Twelve troops have signed up for camp at the Salem scout office, Higby said this week. Last year about 400 scouts attended camp. Jypewriter Mechanic Held Local Police A typewriter mechanic wanted in three northwest cities on charg es of larceny and obtaining money by false pretences was arrested at a local hotel Thursday by Salem police detectives. The man was listed by police as Larry A. Griffith, Grays Har bor. Police records indicated that Griffith had earlier served time in the Oregon state penitentiary for burglary and in Minnesota state prison for forgery. Griffith was released to Detec tive Callahan of the Portland police department for return to that city where he Is wanted on charges of grand larceny and ob taining money my false .pretenses (checks). Warrants had also been issued charging him with larceny by bailee in Hlllsboro and erand larceny in Grays Harbor. The four warrants called for $4,500 bail. Parker arrested Griffith Thurs day morning at a dbwntown Sa lem hotel following a., tip- from Portland police. Parker indicated that Griffith had been active throughout the northwest as typewriter and business machine repairman and had used the pro fession as an "in" for his alleged therts. Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia and Alabama are leading coal producing states.
