LoulS Buaehz' Claim Scorned By Lattimore By Roger D, Greene I WASHINGTON, April 21 -UP)-Owen Lattimore today derided charges that he was a member of communist cell and scoffed at Senator McCarthy (R-Wis) as a man whose knowledge is limited to "what he nas leamea irum Charlie Chan movies." I Cited by McCarthy as the Iso. 1 Soviet spy in the United States, Lattimore turned a torrent of sar-, easm on his accusers at a news conference in which he declared: S As "a ' loyal American citizen who is not and never has been a communist or anything but an American, I say it is long , past time to clean out the cesspool fron which this campaign of character assassination, intimida tion and vilification emanates." ! T.altimnre directed some of his sharpest barbs at former com munist leader Loujs F. Budenz, whowore before a senate invest igating committee yesterday that t Vi a1 rj4 Hirfu tan Amu erican-hatched red plot to betray China to, the communists. Other Developments I Lattirriore's counterattack cap ped a day which caw these other developments: 1. Senate investigators subpoe naed Dr. Bella V. Dodd of New York, a i former' member of the U.S. communist politburo, to con front Budenz next Tuesday on his testimonr that hifih communist officials had described Lattimore in communist, ; . i Dr. Dodd has made a sworn af fidavit that in her four years in the fed party's top circles from 194 to 1948 she never met Lat timore and never heard of him. 12. The senate inquiry commit tee, headed by Charirman Tyd- lngs (D-Md), also subpoenaed two former FBI operatives named by McCarthy to help substantiate his charges against Lattimore. FBI Undercover Agent i The two are John J. Huber of Mt.. Vernon. N.Y- described by McCarthy as a former FBI under cover agent who worked inside the communist party for 10 years; and Lawrence Kerley, now a New Yrtrlr Journal-American reDorter. ;;With Dr. Dodd. they have been rsrrtnrptt m nnnear of lore ine i va in committee next Tuesday when Budenz will undergo furth er Questioning. 2. Republican Senator Flanders of Vermont told the senate that certain links" seemed to- be es tablished between the Moscow oarty line and United States pol Icy in events leading up to the red conquest of China. Flanders said that as a result of Budenz' testimony, McCarthy's case against the state department has taken "a more serious turn." Lattimore told newsmen that Budenz: testimony was "gossip and hearsay. Ffcker Infant MT. ANGEL Funeral services for the infant son of Mr. and Mrs Joseph . F. Ficker, Mt. TV stocks sold at higher prices most of the day, despite heavy profit taking, and closed with gains running ;to around three points. Rail and automobile shares made a late bid for favor. A liberal sprinkling of low-priced issues also made a good show ing. , Elsewhere : gains and losses were pretty well scrambled, with changes either way limited main ly to fractions.; Business was fast through the day and turnover piled up to 2,710,000 shares from 2.590,000 Thursday. It was the eleventh full session in a row m which sales have amounted to 2,000,000 or more shares. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks inched up .1 of one point to 76.2. The rise was due entirely to the industrial group, because both rails and utilities were unchanged on average. Farm Accident Proves Fatal to St. Paul Man Statesman New Service ST. Soybeans on High Groimd CHICAGO, April 21 -(P)- Soy beans boomed into new high ground today with government buying of cash beans serving as the inspiration. Other cereals had fair-sized gains. Wheat closed higher, corn was to 1 cent higher, oats were higher, soybeans were 2 to AVa higher and lard was unchanged to 3 cents a hun dred pounds higher. Failure of rain to fall In the southwest caused buying in new crop wheat deliveries. The five day weather bureau outlook saw no rain for the dry area.
