2 The Startman, Sclorcu Oregon. Saturday, April 12. 1950 The Bible Story JEREMIAH (Editor' note: This Is the J lit of a series from the Old Testament. The text is condensed from selections by Houston Harte for the book, "in Onr Imaae." Illustration by Gay Rowe also from the book. Copy rlcnV Oxford University Press, Inc.) Why is this people of Jerusalem slidden baclr by a perpetual backsliding? They hold fast deceit, they refuse to return. The wise men are ashamed: they have rejected the word of the Lord; and what wisdom is in them? For every one is given to covet- ousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one deal eth falsely. For they have heal ed the hurt of my people slight ly, saying, Peace, peace when there is no peace. I will surely consume them, saith the Lord; and the things that I have giv en them shall pass away from them. The Lord our God hath put us to silence, and given us the water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord, We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble. For the hurt of my people I am hurt- Is there no balm in Gil ead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of my people recovered? Behold, the days come, alt' the Lord, that I will make a new covenant with Israel. I will pot my law in their ln- ' ward parts, and write it In their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall teach no more very man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying. Knew the Lord: for they shall all know me, from the least of ' them onto the greatest of them tilth the Lord: for I will forgive their Iniquity, and will remember their sin no' more. In that time, saith the Lord, the children of Israel shall come, weeping: they shall seek the Lord their God. My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go. astray. All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said. We offend not, because' they have sinned against the Lord, the habitation of justice, the hope of their father." And I will bring Israel again to his habitation. In those days, saith the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall none: for I will pardon them whom I reserve. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me Zion spreadeth forth her hands, and there is none to com fort her. Behold, O Lord, and consider to whom thou hast dont f this. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, be cause his compassions fail not The Lord is my portion, saith my r soul;, therefore will I hope in him. The Lord is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and( quietly wait for the salvation of the f Lord. For the Lord will not cast off for ever: But though he . cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multi tudes of his mercies. For he doth not afflict willingly nor grieve f the children of men. Let ns search and try our ways, and tarn ajraln to the Lord. Let ns lift vp ear heart with oar hands unto God in the heavens. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life. O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong; judge thou my cause. ... 5 Thou, O Lord, remalnest for ever; thy throne from genera tion to generation.
