Assistant Professor Charles ; Noxon will lead a workshop group ; In Geography on a tour of Europe. Jndudinf England, Scotland, France, Italy, Switzerland and other European countries. The tour , will begin about June 12. and stu dents will return to Oregon about days later. ! Fronf July 17 to August 11, two workshops ' will be offered. Dr. , C DeWitt Boney, Rutgers univer sity professor.' of education, will lead a group in Language Arts. Dr. Boney is an outstanding authority in the area of reading and has done extensive work for the Am erican Association for Childhood education. The emphasis will be on the development approach to reading. ':'-.-.-- Kenneth Wanless, science speci alist in the Detroit, Mich, school system, will repeat his workshop in elementary science. Rifle Squad Formed In Liberty District IUUl Ntwi Strrkt LIBERTY The rifle corps sponsored by the Liberty Com munity dub met Tuesday night at the Liberty store.; Clyde Brummell of the Mafine Corps league will have charge of the group, which is open to both boys and girls. Officers for the group were elected with president, Jack Wlrtn, secretary, Fred Plenge, and range officer, Milbre Sipe. Investigators, Larry Doyle, Louis Kurth and Larry Sipe. It was de cided that the club would meet every other Tuesday, and the next meeting will be May 2. Forty women were in attendance. Mrs. Gilbert Looney led the de votional period and preceding the devotions, Mrs. Homer Bell and Mrs. George Richardson sang: j duet. "Great Is Thy Faithfulness. The speaker, Lynnton El well, minister at Lebanon Christian church, gave a challenging mess age on "Lead Out, but Not In." The tables were decorated with centerpieces of primroses, cherry blossoms and other spring flow ers. Japanese umbrellas and lan terns were also used to enhance the tables' decor. ' EAST SALEM New business firms are taking over the vacant building lots In all East Salem communities. The fourth vacant corner at Park avenue and Gar den road now has a new building under construction. First there was the large Park N Market and cold storage lock er building, the Assembly of God church which has now a new Sun f day school building under con struction, the Richfield gasoline station, and last, the new furni ture store building for the Mau-rer-Bogardus company. This new building Is on the southwest corner of Garden road and Park ave.. Just a short dis tance from the present city limits. The new building will be one story of concrete construction and modern in styling. It will have over 9,000 square feet of floor space and is being placed so there will be black top auto parking strip around the corner for j at least SO cars. The store will carry a com plete line of home furnishings. The contractor is R. D. Bright and the construction Is by the Cecil Lant company. On Garden road to the east of the church parking lota is a new display lot opened the past week by the Gibson Tractor Sales ser vice. At S3S5 Garden road a bakery firm of Portland has taken .over the house as a distribution center. East Salem will soon have an other gasoline station. This one is on the southeast corner of Lan caster drive and Sunnyview ave. It is being built by Louis Lorenz who bought the lot about two years ago. SX1YICES TO 8TAET UNIONVALE The Rev. W. C Graves of Portland will begin a week's series of meetings at the Unionvale Evangelical United Brethren church Sunday. Services will be held nightly during the week with the exception of Sat urday. Euclid chapter, OES, held their regular meeting Tuesday night Guests ' and members ' escorted and introduced were Rex Hart ley, past grand patron; Mrs. Belle Bloom, worthy matron, and Vince Hurley, worthy patron from Al bany; Ronald Gilson, worthy, pa- tron from Lebanon. Refreshments followed the meeting. Mrs. Edna Reeves returned home Sunday morning from visit ing her daughter, Mrs. George Potts, Jr and family in Jordan Valley. Crews Finish Census Count At Mt. Angel Nwa 8rvteo MT. ANGEL Felix Schultz, census crew chief for this district. stated that the city census was completed this week but that the official count would not be re leased until verified by the Salem district office. The enumerators were Mrs. Joseph L. Wachter and Mrs. Eve lyn Weeks. Schultz stated that the census 'in general was pro gressing ahead of schedule and that the farm districts were do ing especially well in cooperating with the agricultural survey. The new officers of the local Rod and Gun club are John Gaffke, president; Ernest Crow der, vice-president; and Maurice Hammer, secretary-treasurer. The ML Angel club has been instru mental in having legal size trou released in Abio.ua and Butte creek this year and also In hav ing the trout season opened two weeks earlier In this area. ! The annual music recital for the grade school of Mt Angel academy will be held in the acad emy auditorium Sunday, April 23, beginning at 2 pan. The grade school orchestra will play ; two numbers.
