Lewis, Sa lem, a sister, Minnie Lewis Hashes, 71, Centralis Wash., and a eenstn. Iaa Lewis Mattison, 81, Independence. The Lewis twins have six ether sisters and two brothers who were not present. New Jersey Town to Erect Paine Statue MORRISTOWN, N. J. tINS) The first heroic statue in the na- Jlon to the . memory of Thomas 'aine will be erected in Morris town, N. J., next Ju 4. Morristown was -selected as the site by the Thomas Paine Memor ial committee because nearby was located Washington's Revolution headquarters, which is now a na tional, shrine. It was at this spot that Paine wrote his famous "These are the ; times that try men's souls." Paine read his im mortal Crisis Papers to a group f discouraged soldiers serving under Washington and Inspired them to continue the fight for freedom and independence. Search for Dram One of New York's ' architects, George Lober, was commissioned to do the fourteen feet high bronze memorial. Lober spent many months doing research work be fore starting the statue to .be sure everything connected with the Work was authentic. He searohed for three months for an American drum of the Rev- Jlution period. Lober depicted 'aine seated upon a large rock, with a musket across his knees, composing the Crisis Papers upon drum. Lober needed a drum for . model and though there were many English, French and Hes- an drums around he had trouble eating an American drum. Picnics Planned The statue, whieh will rest up on a granite base, will be placed fat a beautiful park which is also newly created. It will be landscap ed for outings and pionies. The city of Morristown is going ell out Is honoring and commem e rating the erection of the statue. For weeks and months prior to the unveiling there will be par ades, speeches, contests among school children, and various other civic events honoring Paine's memory There Is only one other statue ft Pain in the world and that Is , located in Paris where he wrote ! the Constitution and BUI of Rights during the French Revolution. For that he was made an honorary citizen of France. The greatest living authority on Paine is Joseph Lewis, the execu tive secretary of the Thomas Paine Memorial committee. It was' en tirely due to his efforts that the American patriot was recently in cluded in the Hall of Fame. About three fourths of U. S. maple syrup and sugar is pro duced in Vermont and New York state, says the National Oeogra hic Society, Brownie Troop Holds Discussion at Liberty Statesman Newi Service LIBERTY Jane Kaminga was hostess to the Brownie troop 112 Tuesday in the school club room. Nineteen girls attended. The group made hot dish pads, and discussed oversea kits. They decided the leader will make the kits and the girls decide what is to go in them and where they are to be sent. The leaders, Mrs. Ar thur Wirth and Mrs. Charles Ry bloom, purchased a first-aid kit for the troop with troop funds. Mrs. L. L. Stringer and children were guests. Healthiest Boy, Girl Selected At Cloverdale Statesman News Service CLOVERDALE Evelyn Hen nies and Jerrold Waldrop have been chosen the healthiest boy and girl from the Cloverdale school. They will march in the lead of the 4-H parade, from this school, on Friday of next week. Mrs. Coele Cantrill, upper grades teacher, is back in school after having been out of school on Monday and Tuesday because of illness. Mrs. L. Bouchie did sub stitute teaching for Mrs. Cantrill. The Home extension club met Wednesday at the Cloverdale school house for a pot luck din ner. Hostesses were Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Holt. Eleanor Trindle was present to demonstrate "Home Freezing" and the many savings it offers. Election of officers, was put In the hands of a nominating com mittee, consisting of Bernice Wip- per and Francine Mickey. Mrs. Schaznpier and Mrs. R. Neiml were appointed to attend the county meeting next Wednesday in Sa lem. . Valsetz Couple Hosts ; Birthday Party Held News Service VALSETZ Mrs. Anna Brown ing, Wilburn, Nina and Niel of Klamath Falls have been recent visitor at the home of Mrs. Browning's daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hagan. They also visited Harrison Brown ning who is ill in the Veteran's hospital at Portland. Mrs. Charles Thompson enter tained for her daughter, Patsy, in honor of her fifth birthday.
