District Contest to Draw 1,000 School Musicians to Salem Salem will be bursting with musla Saturday. Well over 1,000 school musicians from 18 cities will be here to perform In a western Oregon district contest and festival They will comprise the 38 Junior and high school bands and orchestra which will be Judged by 11 committee of university music instructor! and band leaders. Playing on a half-hour schedule, the individual band performances will start as early as t:30 a.m. and continue until late, afternoon. PUylng will be at Parrish Junks high and Salem high school. j M usical groups rated superior will be eligible to compete in a state contest at Eugene May I end 6. Several outstanding groups also will be chosen to appear in a con cert Saturday night at TJO in the local high school auditorium. Salem will be represented by lu high school band and orchestra, Parrish band and orchestra, Leslie band and orchestra and West Sa lem band. The other school musicians are coming from Albany, Brownsville, Chemawa, Corvallis, Dallas, Cot tage Grove, Eddyvilla, Emira, Eu- Sene, Harrisbfirg, Independence, unction City, Lebanon, Lowell, fclcKenzie, Newport, Silver ton, Bpringf ield, Sweet Home, Scio, Etayton, Toledo, Turner, Waldport and Woodburn. Oregon State; John Richard, Lewis and Clark; Char- Agreement Averts Strike Of Bus Drivers IPORTLAND, April iO-VA last-minute agreement averted a strike oi AFL drivers and shopmen on Overland Greyhound lines from Portland to Salt Lake City tonight. i Commissioner 1. 1. Pickett of the federal mediation service said company and union officials had reached a tentative agreement. A union official said details were to be worked out tomorrow, and then submitted to a vote of the 22S drivers and shopmen involved. The union- said th strike was "iada- ftnitely postponed.' The strike had been scheduled to begin at 1241 a.m. Friday. Company and union oftteiala held a five-hour session mat resulted la tha agreement. I The principal point of dispute was a pension plan. The union also asked soma changes in working Grocery Company Opposes Nyssa Plant Preference W. H. Ehrman, General Gro cery company, Portland, appeared before the state board of control Thursday and urged that it rescind a previous decision in connection with the purchase of sugar far state Institutions under which the Nyssa, eastern Oregon plant, re ceives the benefit of the 9 per cent differential for Oregon manufac ture. Grocery company officials said they had submitted the low bid for sugar on several occasions but could not overcome tha differen tial. Gov. Douglas McKay told other board members that the Nyssa plant, an Oregon operation, has a large number of employes and pays a large amount oi state and local taxes annually. laf Stowell, Education. Wilsons Enter Formal Ple& Of Innocent VANCOUVER, Wash., April 20-(P)-The Wilson brothers, accused of the kidnap-slaying of Jo Ann Dewey, entered their formal plea of innocent today. Utah and Tinman Wilson were arraigned this morning, still not sure whether they could have the attorney of their choice, Irvin Goodman of Portland, to defend them. "If Goodman is not allowed full participation in the trial," Turman Wilson told tha judge, "we'll de fend ourselves. . The matter will probably be settled tomorrow morning, when Goodman will confer with County Prosecutor R. De Witt Jones and Superior Judge Eugene Cushing Cushing will preside at the Wilson brothers trial. Superior Judge Charles W. Hall, who conducted the arraignment. set tne trial date for June 19. Bateson Heads Salem High's Student Body The 1950-51 student body presi dent at Salem high school will be Gilbert Bateson, Salem route 5, as a result of a vote of students Thursday. .
