After the tax message to con gress was made public shortly af ter noon, the market as a whole lifted from the session's low point and closed with only a slight net loss on the day. The steadiness also was main tained despite continuation of the coal strikes and threats of strikes in the automobile and communica tions Industries. ... - One Wall street source said the proposed corporate tax increases "should not be too greatly disturb ing'' to business which also would benefit from proposed decreases. Closing so-called 4ax loopholes, Wall street broker felt, was Jus tified to a certain extent ; . Overall trading was a cautious affair from start to finish with vol time at 1,340,000 shares. . Balanced on a slip pery branch six feet above the ground, the dog seemed to be weighing the sagacity of pressing his pursuit of the sure-footed cat only a few tempting feet out on the limb. Pal lunged, missed and thudded to earth. At a pet hospital, where Pal is nursing a broken leg, Harrington explained that his pooch, an in veterate cat chaser, spied the kit ty in a friend's back yard. When the cat scampered ur a tree the dog shot up the sloping trunk, fol lowing the enemy out on a limb. "He's a game dog," said Har rington. Grains Make Nice Recovery After Dropping "CHICAGO. Jan. 23 -CSV Grains made a nice recovery from early weakness today, ending with small-sized gains. Final prices were up about 1 to 2 cents from the day's lows and fractionally above last week's finish. In part the recovery could be attributed to short-covering, trad-! ers said. Except in wheat, the mar ket has been weak for the last several sessions and those who were on the bear side before the slump started undoubtedly had profits. - Before the rally got underway all rye deliveries, September and December corn, and November soybeans made new lows. Wheat ended lower to H higher, corn was H-H higher, oats were - higher, rye was Vi to 1 cent higher, soybeans were Vi W higher and lard was 2 cents lower to 3 cents a hundred pounds higher. I The market turned around about the time that Spain announced it wanted 500,000 metric tons of wheat; corn, rye or coarse grains. Daw Khin Khin Gyi, as they left on their honeymoon after their marriage here recently. Aore than 1,000 guests attended the reception given by the presi dent at which a sovereign-studded wedding cake was eaten.
