' - sf V'V - ,,V mi-m 11 t4 it "11 i-iiliiiiiiii iaf ml David (rtfht) and Jonathan (Editor's note: This Is the ISUi of a series froaa the Old Testament The test is condensed from selection by Houston Harte for the book, "In Our lmaie." Illustration my Guy Rowe also from the hook. Copy right IMS, Oxford University Press. Inc.) As David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Ab ner brought him before Saul. Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of ail people. And when the women came out, singing and dancing, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands, Saul was very wroth, and said, What can he have more but the kingdom? And Saul eyed David from that day forward. Saul spake to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David; and told David, My father seeketh to kill thee: hide thyself: and I will commune with my father of thee. And if it please my father to do thee evil, I will shew it thee: I will shoot arrows, as though at a mark. And I will send a lad, saying, Go, find the arrows. If I say unto the lad, The arrows are on this side of thee; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt. But if 1 say. The arrows are beyond thee; go thy way. So David hid himself in the field. And the king sat down to eat, and David's place was empty. Saul said. Wherefore cometb not the son of Jesse to meat today? Jonathan answered, David asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem. Then Saul's anger was kindled, and he cast a Javelin at him. Whereby Jonathan knew that It was determined of his father to slay David. And in the morning Jonathan went out into the field. And he shot an arrow, and cried, Is not the arrow beyond thee? Make speed. David therefore escaped. And every one in distress gath ered unto him: and he became a captain over about 400 men. And the Philistines invaded the land and Saul went against them. When Saul returned, he took 3,000 men and went to seek David. And he came to a cave and went into cover his feet. David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe. Saul rose up and went on his way. David also went out of the cave and cried. My lord the king. When Saul looked behind him, David said. Behold this day the Lord delivered thee into mine hand; in that I cut off the skirt and killed thee not, know thou that I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. Saul wept. And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I, for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. And now, I know that thou shalt surely be king. Swear now that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me. And David sware unto Saul. Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and Saul was sore wounded. Then said Saul to his armorbearer, Thrust me through. But his armorbearer would not Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon It So Saul died, and his three sons, that day to gether. David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and Jona than: The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen. Tell it not in Gath, publish it not In the streets of Askelon: lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncercumcised triumph. I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.
