Construction to Start Soon ' On $288,000 OCE Library statctaua Newt ferric MONMOUTH, Jan. 12 Oregon College of Education's new li brary, to be constructed on a site next to the administration building here soon, will present students with the finest in modern facilities for study and research. Cost is estimated at $288,000. The main library floor will be devoted to five areas reading. Drowsing, circulation ana index, stacks and quiet study. facing the administration buil ding will be the huge fan-shaped general reading room, nearly 60 feet deep from the lobby entrance to the commanding sweep of win dows . at the north side of the room. Koom for Browsing Off to the right of the reading room will be a semi - circular browsing room, comfortably ar ranged with a large open fire place and easy access to the gen - eral circulation desk and reserve book racks. Near the center of the floor the lobby opens into an area housing the cardi Index, which In turn leads to the stack room, about 25 feet deep and extending across the building for over 60 feet. There will be room In this section of stacks for 20,500 books. 18,000 more volumes will be stored else where. . Behind the stack room, there "will be a quiet study room about 22 by 80 feet where conditions in dudve to intense quiet concentra tion will prevail. Joining this stu dy will be a small sound-proofed typing room where typewriters will be available, for student use. Offices Included ' I Work rooms, offices for the li brary staff and an Oregon history room 20 by 21 feet will also be located on the main floor. , On the lower floor other librery facilities will Include a large work ' room with stack space for 18,000 more books, a delivery area and an outside return book chute. Book chutes and lifts will con nect the two floors for rapid ser vice on withdrawals from stor age. On the lower floor also there will be new headquarters for OCE's Audio - Visual center. This will provide a classroom, a pre view room, an office with work and record rooms, a slide room and dark room facilities with space for future expansion. Children's Classrooms ' Children's literature classes will find a new classroom and child ren's lit. library on this floor. This classroom will also be used for library classes. A small col lection of children's books will be permanently housed here. Occupying a corner i section fronting the administration build ing and opening onto a pleasant landscaped 'terrace, there will be faculty rooms which will include a small auditorium, seating 81, a reception room with open fire place and semi - circular lounge, a small kitchen and a powder room. Architects for the new building are Wolff and Phillips of Port land. The group voted to meet the first Wednesday of each month and the February 1 meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Carl So derquist at 720 McClaine street with Mrs. A. J. McCannel as as sistant hostess. Officers elected Wednesday were: president, Mrs. A. J. Jack; vice president, Mrs. Hahn; secre tary - treasurer, Mrs. McCannel. This group will plan the service and devotion at the January meeting of the WSCS next Tuesday. PTA TO MEET . MARQUAM An executive meeting of the Thomas 67-J Par ent - Teacher association will be held at the school house on Janu ary 16 at 2 o'clock. On Thursday night, January 19, the regular PTA meeting will be held at the school at 8 o'clock. A program and guest speaker is being ar ranged for and refreshments will be served following.
