The; state of siege was decreed by the conservative government Nov. 9. 1 The liberals have proclaimed a boycott of the election, withdrawn their candidate, and started a nation-wide folded arms strike until Monday. More i than 500 persons have been reported killed in waves of violence in recent months. Liberals say It will be the first election under such circumstances in 130 years of Colombian inde pendence. Liberals Killed I Killed in the shooting that prov ed fatal to Vicente Echandia were two other liberals. Wounded were one of the candidate's bodyguards and a policeman. Liberals said only the intervention of an army lieu tenant saved the life of Dario Echandia. f The liberal leader said the shoot ing was an ambush.w For a precedent for tomorrow's funeral the liberals had the huge demonstration that marked the funeral of their former leader, Jorge Eliecer Gaitan. His assassin ation in April, 1948, touched off a destructive riot and attemnted revolution which cost hundreds of lives and interrupted the Bogota inter American conference. The liberals said Dario Echan dia was walking near the San Martin monument with a praty of 21 persons, including his two bro- tners, Vicente and Domingo, three senators and' five congressmen, when 10 military police in uniform rounded a corner and opened fire.
