Swift Selling Resistance in Stock Market NEW YORK, Oct, 13-(-A swift forward surge In the stock market today was cut back by stiff selling; resistance. There was only s small net gain at the close. More issues were traded 1,136 than in any other session this year, and the volume of business at 1,790,000 shares was the third highest in 1949. During the ad vance, 123 new highs for the year were established. Large blocks were traded fre quently during the first hour boosting the total for that period along to 520,000 shares. Prices advanced throughout the list with some of the gains topping 2 points in the initial phases of the market. But by noon the en thusiasm died down on the buying side and prices started slipping. The decline was steady, except for brief periods, throughout the rest of the session. John L. Lewis' proposal to add 30 to 35 cents to the cost of each ton of coal as his price for end ing the coal strike found no favor in Wall street and dampened the buying spirit.
