Specialist in Structure, Action Of Proteins Teaches at WU A specialist in the structure and behavior of proteins is the latest addition to Willamette university's chemistry department. He is Dr. James C. Nichols, associate professor, who is the third full-time in structor for the 150 students who are enrolled in chemistry course this year. . The 27-year-old native of Canada has degrees from University of Alberta in Edmonton and from i ' University of Wisconsin, where he T j studied under an Eli Lilly scholar- L,OClge IO UilSerVe BIU)J. Written Articles Nichols has studied In great de tail what happens to proteins in blood serums and has contributed several articles on that subject to the Journal of the American Che mical society. In March, 1949, Dr. Nichols presented a paper to the society meeting in San Francisco. The young professor hasn't de cided yet whether he will become an American citizen. Besides his wife, the family consists of a 3-month-old ; son. During the war Nichols worked for the Canadian government, helping on the "syn thesis of organic compounds p-o-ject." Some Advanced Students Of the 150 Willamette students in chemistry coutses two - thirds will take only one year of chemis try while the remaining 50 will study more advanced courses, ac cording to faculty members. One of the larger groups of ad vanced students is the pre-meds. Willamette's reputation in the me dical schools of the state is held to be excellent judging from the ready acceptance of most students. Dr. Charles H. Johnson, head of the chemistry department, has taught here since 1928. Prof. Floyd W. Bird, a graduate of Linfield col lege and Oregon State college, joined the department in 1946. Area Asks to Quit Proposed Fire District A- third group asked Saturday to be eliminated from the proposed organization of the Salem Heights liberty rural ; fire protection district. They are 28 property owners re siding in an area bounded by the Pacific highway, Madrona avenue. Liberty road Land Salem Heights avenue. They petitioned Marion county court ! Saturday to t al lowed to withdraw. They had previously signed pe titions asking for organization of the fire district. Since then they have become 100 per cent against the district for they have no de sire to bond their homes to pro tect some property interests who are trying to. force it upon them.' "The sponsors of the Liberty Salem Height fire district," they said, "get the property owners to sign their petitions, misrepresent ed by telling them it was all to be done by contribution and not by taxation.
