August Z7, 1343 Lutherans Plan To Attend Camp From Silverton SILVERTON, "Aug. 28 Many Lutherans from here plan to at tend the Willamette Lutheran Bi ble cimp which opens at Colton Sunday, and will continue until September 2. Members of Immanuel Luther f league will have an outing this week end on the beach at Chapel j by the Sea. the Rev. S. L. Almlie I reports. The group will leave Sat urday afternoon and return Sun day night. There will be Sunday - services at Immanuel church but the membership has been , invited to attend services at Trinity! - Im manuel Ladies Aid society will meet Thursday at 2 o'clock at the church with Mrs. Jul Fair ' and Mrs. E. Brine as hostesses. The Rev. James A. Tofte will speak on 1 Christ Your Master?" Sunday at 11 o'clock at Calvary Lutheran church. At First Christian church, the Rev. Arthur Charles Bates has an nounced communion and worship services at 11 a.m. His topic will be "When Christ Pays No Atten tion." Christian Endeavor will be at T p.m. For the evening worship hour a question-answer service Is scheduled. The RevM. J. K. Fuhr will hold communion service Sunday morning at Trinity church. Trin ity Ladies Aid society will meet Wednesday at 2 p.m. and Dorcas society Friday at 8 p.m. The Rev. Ben F. Browning will peak, on "Religion in Education" Sunday at 11 o'clock at the Meth odist church. ToLeavel Church Views Asked for Fair Request for pictures of churches and for religious posters to use la the Marion County Sunday School union, booth , at the state fair was Issued Friday by Fred de Vries, president. The booth will return to the northwest corner of the grandstand, where it has been for nearly 20 years. De Vries said the union wants photographs of churches and par sonages, especially new buildings. The posters desired are of the "message at a glance" type. Pictures were also requested of church picnics, vacation Bible school groups, classes and other activities. The public is invited. Miss Eland. Estonian by birth, has an international background. She has been the immigrant and social worker at the U. S. immi gration station for the past seven years. She is one of the staff members of the ULCA board of social missions. Miss Eland aided C. A. Kells, formerly of Salem YMCA, with the placement of Ardo Tarem and family, Estonian displaced per sons, in Salem recently. KellsJ who has seen her at work, called her "the guardai angel" of many immigrant families. Aug. 26 Ap pointment of the Rev. Clarence Slocum of Portland as vicar of St. Mary's Episcopal mission here, ef fective September 1, was an nounced today. He will replace the Rev. W. S. Van Meter, who was selected as deputy state labor commissioner to administer the new state fair employment prac tices law. Slocum graduated from General Theological seminary in New York seminary and obtained his mas ter's degree from University of Michigan. He served a pastorate in Spokane, was a chaplain at Portland's Good Samaritan hos pital and for several years taught languages and hsitory at St. Hel en's hall in Portland. Slocum will occupy the reslr dence at 344 Hardcastle ave., from which NMr. and Mrs. Van Meter will move next week to Salem, Salem Pastor Resigns Post Resignation of the Rev. Herman J. Bohl as pastor of Christian Al liance church in Salem has been accepted, effective September 18. Bohl said his plans for the future are not yet definite. The minister came here from Hood River 4 years ago. He was recently elected president of the local chapter of the National As sociation of Evangelicals, has been active in church youth activities and is a member of the Salem academy board, for which he was chairman of the educational committee. Rev. Stevens' Talk Invited The Rev. Olive Stevens, minis ter for Salem chapter of the In stitute of Religious Science and Philosophy, has been invited to speak at the annual congress of the International New Thought alliance at Los Angeles September 4 to 10. Hoblitt, Sil verton, who visited here Thursday and friday, recently organized his own company in San Francisco, re presenting northwest manufactur ing companies. Previously young Hoblitt, who was reared in Silverton, was con nected with two exporting and im porting firms in San Francisco, Where he served following his discharge from the marines. Hoblitt became widely known during the war while he was im prisoned in Japan and served as interpreter at the prison camp and was permitted to speak over the radio a number of times. Roy Altlerson in Hospital at Dallas DALLAS, Aug. 25-(Special)- Roy Alderson, 61, Dallas, mill wright at Willamette Valley Lum ber company, received a broken right leg yesterday when struck by a timber at the mill. He is confired at the Dallas hospital. The accident occurred while Mrs. Alderson was attending the last encampment of the GAR at In dianapolis, Ind. In the competition for individ ual awards, Kelley Berquist plac ed first in Jerseys and third high in the individual boys' contest with a score of 543 points out of a possible 600. Conrad Hamann placed first in Guernseys and second in Jerseys; Ancil Swaim placed fourth In Hol steins and fourth in Guernseys. Sweet Home Men Face Theft Charges SWEET HOME, Aug. 26 (Special) Two men, arrested by Patrolmen Clover and Kneave early Tuesday morning on charges of attempting to burglarize a local tavern, are in Linn county Jail at Albany. Nelson Woodrow Hurd and Kel ley K. Murrell were apprehended at Bill's place at about 3 a.m. Tuesday. When apprehended Murrell was standing on a ladder near a window leading to the main room of the building, police said. Hurd had his shoes and socks in his hands. Police said entrance to the back room of the tavern had been gain ed by forcing the lock of the door with a bar made from an auto mobile crank. Last Friday both Hurd and Murrell received suspended sent ences in Judge Fred McHenry's court. Hurd was sentenced to two years on a charge of burglarizing an Albany restaurant and Murrell was sentenced to one year for grand larceny Involving the theft of an automobile.
