to show the spirit of the annual
Hop Fiesta scheduled for August
31, September 1-3. 1 J -
The 20 dozen hop stenciled T-
shirts are seen being worn by
many Independence people and
are selling fast in several local
stores. It is reported that 30 dozen
more have been ordered and will
remain on sale through the fiesta
days. ' - ;
The queen's gown and her four
attendants gowns will be made
by Mrs. Clara Graves. It was de
cided that the young queen will
wear the traditional white and her
prince5ses will wear pastel col
org. All will wear royal capes. The
queen will. also be presented with

charge of the Fisher Funeral
home and wm be held from the
Christian church in Jefferson at

Born in Salem on July 16, 1859,
Adah Morrison was the daughter
of William and Julia Chitwood
Selph. early Oregon pioneers. She
had spent her entire life In Ore
gon, living at Kirby for 60 years,
then at I Grants Pass from 1917
until 1942. since which time- she
had made her home In Jefferson
Mrs. .Morrison was a life-long
member of the Christian church
She was also a charter member
of the Rebekah lodge at ; Kirby;
a member of post American Le
gion auxiliary at Kirby, this
post having been 'named for her
son Glen who lost his life in
World War I; a member - of the
USWV auxiliary; the VFW aux
iliary. and the chapter of Gold
Star Mothers, all of Grants Pass
In Jacksonville in 1875 she was
married to Manonl Morrison. He
died in 1906. Surviving are two
daughters. Mrs. S. L. Rothrock
of Denver, Colo, and Mrs. Ep
perly. Six children preceded her
in death. Surviving also ) are 20
grandchildren and 16 great grand
children.

INDEPENDENCE The 1949
hop harvest got underway in the
Independence area this wveek with
several of the smaller yards start
ing to pick the early varieties.
Most of the larger yards will start
on the earlies next week.

conditions, the early crop is not
as good as last, but some growers
report better hop?.,
One of the three picking ma
chines of the Hop Harvesters Inc,
located at the McLaughlin ranch,
was started. Tuesday and the oth
er two machines went into use
Tnursday. It was reported that the
hp picking machine at the A. J.
Hrener ranch would be started
Ll'-nday.
From all indications there will
be plenty of work for several
thousand pickers during the next
month in this district. With the
added acreage of beans in this dis
trict of over 100 acres which are
just now reaching full picking.

The harvesting of the early
crop should be completed within
the next two weeks and will be
followed by the late varieties
which will be ready for harvest
the latter part of this month and
the first of September. From all
indication, the late varieties will
be better this -year than the ear
lies.
The picking price for hops this
year has been set at three rents
a pound and harvesters should be
able to earn some good money this
year. Most of the Independence
merchants are taking hop tickets
in trade again this year and local
stores are planning to keep long
er hours and will be open on Sun
days starting August 21.

who has been confined to the Sil
verton hospital for the past two

ing his own" Friday. Hubbs has
been showing considerable im
provement but suffered a slight
backset.
Mrs. Rex Olsen, who submit

reported as getting along ricely

The club voted to enter an ex
