(Statesman photo.) Stocks Gain Near Record Highs for Year NEW YORK. Aug. KM-Per-sistent strength was displayed by the stock market today in a re covery movement that took av erage prices to within a short distance of the 1949 high point Gains were from fractions to around 2 points, and there were only a few set backs suffered here and there among the leaders. The - reaction suffered by the list on Tuesday was more than wiped out by a steadily advanc ing price front that spread into nearly every major group. At the start, trading was quiet and prices fairly well mixed and narrow. But that condition soon gave way to the advance that carried through without any siz able retreat. In the last half hour of trading, however, there were a number of instances of profit taking among individual issues. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks was up .4 of a point to 65.1, only 1.1 points below the 1949 high. The industrial com ponent of the average gained .5 of a point, rails and utilities .1 of a point. Volume at 1,280,000 shares ex ceeded Tuesday's total of 1.140,- 000. The market was a little broader with 1,057 issues traded as against 1,039 the day before. Of the total, 623 advanced and 197 declined. On the forward move, 77 new highs for the year were reached.
