(Dusty) Rhodes, team leader. fHot Pilots' to Entertain Delegates and Salem Ths hot - flying "BIus Angels" of the U. 6. navy will zoom their planes over Salem Friday at S p. m. both to entertain American Legion convention delegates and to help dedicate Salem's new navy air reserve training facility at Sa lem airport. t Precision flying and mock com bat are the specialties of the "Blue Angels," an official flight exhibi tion team of the U. S. navy com prising six pilots and eight crew- tors. The exhibition, usually put on by the "Blue Angels" is of about 20 minutes duration. It consists of loops, rolls and Cuban eights, all done In close formation at minimum altitudes. The team first demonstrates its maneuvers in three plane for mation, then in four planes. The 'Bearcat,' at 500 miles pr hour is the fastest propellor - driven plane in use to- day. ; It; has a phenomenal rat of climb: at the Cleveland Air Races in 1946 a standard Navy "Beat cat" took off from a standing start 'and climbed to an altitude of lO.noo feet in 100 seconds a rate of climb of over a mile a minute. The South Dakota American Legion has established a new all-time membership record for 1949 Department Adjutant Walter Travis has announced tha.t the 1949 enrollment is now 29.451. the highest in 30 vears. It represents 140.32 per cent of the department's assigned national quota: The form er record was set In 1947 with 29 -367 .members for the full 12 months. Boy Scout Troop Increase Record Tops for Legion I Tor the third successive .year th American Legion has led all civic organizations in net increas es in membership of its Boy Scout troops, acording to the American Legion magazine. The Legion has the second larg est increase of any organization, including church, school and civ ic. It is now supporting some 3, 68S scout units. This is an in crease of 270 over th previous year..
