July 27 More Americans better than one out of every two are church mem bers now than at any time in his tory, according to the Yearbook of American Churches published this week. Pointing out that 150 years ago only one person in fifteen was a church member, Dr. Samuel Mc Crea Cavert, general secretary of the Federal Council of Churches. observed that the annual rate of increase, while behind earlier de cades, is running slightly ahead of the country's population. Tne most recent estimate of the nation's population is 148,000,000. The yearbook's compilation of church membership is approxim ately 76,000,000. . "On the surface at least, the United States appears to be a re ligious country," states Dr. Cav ert. In round numbers there are 45,000,000 Protestants; . 25,000.000 Roman Catholics; 5,000,000 Jews and 1,000,000 Eastern Orthodox. He acknowledges that a wide discrepancy exists between church-membership and church attendance in America. He points out that recent surveys of typical communities indicate that on any Sunday, except Easter, only 30 per cent of those on church rolls at tend a service. "Any thoughtful observer," he comments, "would detect a dis turbing discrepancy between the size of churches and their in fluence on American life," The 76,000,000 church members are split among more than 250 separate and independent church bodies listed in the yearbook a fragmentation peculiar to the United States. The number of diverse denomin ations, Dr. Cavert says, is not as serious as it looks. Ninety seven per cent of all church members are, found on the rolls of the 50 largest denominations and eight denominational families embrace 80 percent of all Protestants. These eight groups are Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian ana Ke formed. Disciples. Episcopal, Con gregational and the Evangelical United Brethren. The great diversity in religion in the United States, Dr. Cavert points out, springs primarily from two factors the great diversity of the population and the emphasis on religious liberty. "The various emigrations from Dallas Pastor to Leave Next Week DALLAS. I the old world to the new brought religious traditions with them. All of the divisions found in all of the countries of Europe were dom esticated in a single nation. As the first half of the 20th century draws to a dose. Dr. Cavert notes that the stress has shifted from Christian individual ity to Christian solidarity. Today there is a fuller recogn ition of the great central con victions of the faith which the churches hold in common." This is reflected, he points out, not only in a growth of coopera tive endeavor through the 700 na tional, state, and local councils of churches, but also in full union. The merger of three bodies to form the Methdist church, the union of the Evangelical and the United Brethren and the recently approved union of the Congrega tional Christian Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church are among the most noteworthy of 14 unions in the past 40 years, Dr, Cavert points out India Minister Will Preach at Baptist Church Dr. Victor Hugo Sword, mis sionary from Gauhati, Assam, India, will preach at Calvary Baptist Church Sunday for both services. Dr. Sword is adviser to the India government and to foreign students at the Assam university where he is university pastor. As a friend of Gandhi and the pres ent prime minister of India, he has been closely connected with the development of India and the present trends there. Dr. Sword will preach at 11 a.m. on "Has Christ the Answer?" At 7:30 p.m. his subject will be, "The Crime of Being a Chris tian". He will also be guest preacher at Calvary Baptist Church on the last two Sundays of August. The United States makes and uses an average of 26 billion tin cans a year. PORTLAND, July 29 A na tion-wide campaign to secure good used clothing for overseas relief will be carried on from September 15 to Thanksgiving day by Church World Service, official relief and reconstruction agency of the Protestant and Eastern Orthodox churches. Rev. Gilbert B. Christian, Oregon' di rector for Church World Service, said today. This is particularly true for millions of refugees in Germany. Greece, Palestine and the Far East." "The present intake at various CWS warehouses is not sufficient to meet urgent demands which we receive regularly from overseas representatives." he added. Church World Service Is seek ing active cooperation on two specific points: 1. A general appeal to all Pro testant churches to increase their contributions of clothing, plus the 8c a pound for handling and. 2. The development of concert ed clothing drives by youth groups, communities, and coun cils of churches. Slogan of the campaign will be "Americans Demand Style Peo ple in Europe and Asia Need Clothes." Full facilities of denomination al promotion channels, local church groups, and press, film and radio will be used to carry forth the campaign. Detailed in formation can be secured from CWS, 215 S.
