I; v - Woman Detective Knows Work ; - I By Adelaide Kerr AP Newfeature Writer - . r " ; - i NEW YORK When the New York police narcotic bureau beard reports ttiat teen-age youngsters in the Bronx were taking mari juana sortie time ago, it sent Detective Winifred Hayes on the case. She put on the slacks and shirt that are her working clothes, climb ed into hftr bright convertible and wheeled uptown. There she watched and waited, hidden in her parked car or ming ling witrf children and people of the neighborhood till she had learned vyhat she needed to know to clamp down on men who wtere selling drugs to youngsters. You wfluld never dream to look at Miss Hayes that she is a de tective. She looks more like a woman who would scream at sight of a burglar. Her dark blond hair curls softly around her young iace, her .eyes are deep blue, her smile is warm and quick. Dressed in her street clothes, she is a sight to turn any man's head, f She had two years at Hunter college and worked at the New Yoik radio station of the Paulist fathers, before her father, who was on the police force, suggested she would make a good detective. She joined the police force in 1940 after a brisk training in city laws, and lifting 40 pound weights. In time she became one of about 20 New York women detectives, and finally was placed on the nar cotic squjjd a unique assignment for a woman. She arid Detective Sherman Willse work together as a team in a constarit search for the seller, of heroin, cocaine and other drugs and for their "plants" (caches). One seller fastened his dope to the backs of mirrors and picture frames with adhesive tape. Others hide it irj their shoe or" under bricks in the cellar. Sometimes Willse does the front work, sometimes it's Miss Hayes, depending on the case. Hayes is particularly useful at trailing peo ple on stjbways or at searching women sellers who carry the dope in hair, girdle or stocking top. More than once she has done stellar work arjd some of her biggest hauls have followed hunches. There if as the time the narcotic squad was tipped that 56 ounces of cocainje could be found in a certain Cuban's apartment in New York. A tare fill search failed to reveal it but the Cuban left town in hate.iSome days later when Hayes and Willse were trailing an addict, they picked up the trail of a seller and followed him to the awriing-cjbvered door of a bar and grill wherehe mysteriously dis appeared, Search in the grill failed to reveal him. Suddenly the sel ler reappeared with a companion carrying a package. Willse nab bed, bothjand found ten ounces of cocaine in the package. Search of the man's apartment, however, revealed nothing more interesting than a bunch of keys. Questioned about one of the keys, the seller said that it belonged to an apartment in Cuba. Suddenly all the pieces of the puzzle flashed together in Hayes' mind to make one complete picture. She realized that the Cuban's apartment which she had searched fruitlessly was near the awning covered door of the grill where the dope seller had disappeared. He must have gone to that apartment! She took the key there, tried it on a hidden door and opened it to find 48 ounces of cocaine. With the 10 ounces they had found on the seller, they had the 56 ounces they had been tip ped: about. , Miss Hayes job keeps her working long-hours, sometimes more than 24 at a time. So she cannot make dates' far ahead. But she sees movies anyway. SiRe owns a movie projector, rents tilms and runs them at home. Dressmaking is her real hobby, though. After a hard day in the dope racket she turns to the sewing machine and runs n hne nsfthe dresses that help make her such a pleasant view. And if things' get dull at home, she has one sure cure tective yarn. - , -she reads a de- Riches Reunion ' 'i On Sunday ' Event of- Sunday at the Elden Molkev plare on the Silver Creek Falls roadliwas the 20th annual reunion fit the George P.
