Midget Racing: WarlsNea? . ew Title Threat I Here Wednesday A ml war and not on the friendly sportsmanlike scale is brewing among the Northwest's midget racing drivers as they have at it in their roaring runt pro a-rams In Portland. Seattle. Tac oma, Spokane and, starting Wed nesday night Salem. An4 the worst part of it is, when the conflagration busts loose one of these niphts. it likely will be in the pits instead of on the track where the customers can have a full noek. ' The expected brawl has" "been .nurifd by the driving tricks of Bob Gregg and Lou Sherman, two of the topnotchers among the pilots , In Oregon and Washington. This year both Gregg and Sherman are ' driving for the same car owner, Harold Smith of Portland. Gregg drives Smith's OffenhauscT special -and Sherman, current leader of the Midget Association driving stand ings even though he has yet to win a Class A main event,' pilots Smith's Ford V-8. Consquently, they are actually a 'driving team. The pranks Gregg and Sherman have been pulling are the lighted fuss for the upcoming explosion. Gregg isn't the type of driver who "makes his own holes to go through" in passtn other cars. Bumping them out of the way, in other words. But Sherman is. So many times this season in the Jantn Beach-faces at Portland Srurman has deliberately bumped th opposition to one side, therein mSkin? the "holes" for Greeg to Tip throueh to his many wins. The trick was worked last Thursday night in Portland, on --fie new California driver Cal Ni day who Promoter Jimmy Ryan considers "the smoothest and one of the very best midget racing drivers I've ever seen." Los Angeles the past two weeks in Coast league play, this week hit the road to San Francisco for sev en games with the once-proud but now near-pulverized Seals. The series opens Tuesday night, port land shellacked both the Seals and Los Angeles six out of seven times in a recent series at Portland. Following the week on the road the Eeavers return home to play Sacramento in a nine-game series starting June 28. After theiSacs visit the Vaughn street park, ttie San Dieeo Padres come in July 6. Elsewhere in the league this week Seattle pteys at Lon An geles, Hollywood at San Diegj and Oakland at Sacramento. The Hollywood-San Diego se ries looms as a gigantic for the San Diego park.
