A IJnibiiHill Grange Plans For Breakfast .UNION HILL Mr. Myra Tigcher, Salem, entertained -the members of the Union Hill Grange Home Economic club at her home on Wednesday afternoon. Plans were made for the Silverton Buck eroo Breakfast to be held at the grange hall on Sunday morning, June 26. Roll dall of current events was answered by Mrs. Fischer, Mrs. Carrie Townsend, Mrs. M. M. Gil mnur, Mr?. Flovd Fox. Mrs. W. M. Tate, Mrs. W. F. Krenz. Mrs. Geneva Hubbard, Mrs. Arthur Mulkey, Mrs. J. C. Krenz. Mrs. O. W. Humphreys, Mrs. Johnnie "Doerfler. Swift's 20th anniversary as local rector. The former church la In use as a parish house since IU removal 25 years ago from the corner site of the present church. It was built five years' after the land at Church and Chemeketa streets was given to the congregation. Ankeriy Unit Hears Reports At Grange Meet; JEFFERSON Elmo Brown, overseer, presided at the Saturday meeting of Ankeny grange. Earl dine Crenshaw and 'Tarvin Grenz were balloted for membership. Mr. and Mrs. Hershey were given the obligation by Past Master Lljyd Marlatt. Mrs. Hattie Mc Carty talked on dusting cherry trees and mint. Jake Gilmour and J. O. Farr gave legislative reports. The Home Economics club will meet with Mrs. William Brown on June 22, with Mrs. Edna Reeves and Mrs. Louise Johnston, co-hostesses. George Marlatt was awarded the scholarship given by the grange, to 4-H summer school at Corvallis. It was voted to hold only one meeting a month until September. Guests this week at the home of Mrs. Louise Johnston at Sidney were cou.ins, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest B. Johnston of Eldora, Iowa. This is the Johnstons' first visit to Ore gon and they think it a wonder ful state. They are also visiting his brother Ray Johnston at Dal las. Mrs. C. O. That's as one Royal Air Force man would tell another in what the British call "raff slang " The Air Ministry put it more prosaically but it boiled down to th same thing Women may Join the R A F. as full fledged members of the serv Ire, although not as flying light ers, starting Feb. I. The ministry said the R A F. will enlist and commission women 18 to 36. Their sex has made up the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF). This now becomes the Women's Royal Air Force. The latter will be merely the name for women in the H,A Y. Silverton Teachers Sign Contracts SILVERTON Lloyd Larsen. chairman of the Silverton school board, announced two new teach ers have signed contracts t' teach in Silverton this fall. I The jewel robbery had all the hallmarks and refinement of a ; thief well known to the police. But it couldn't be he, because" he was in prison for an earlier robbery. : Suspect after suspect came and i went. The further the police in- : j vestigated, the more puzzled they I became. No one, simply no one. but that thief could have pulled so masterly a job. But how, since he was locked up? A smart young detective had an idea. Hiring in the thief, he asked. ' CLOVERD ALE Ka rleen Drag er, Evelyn Hennies and Melvin Archibald will be the only 4-H club members attending summer school in Corvallis from this com munity. Karleen. a member of the Lucky 13 Sheep club, won her full scholarship last fall on the Pacific International judging team, and livestock demonstration team. Evelyn's and Melvin's were given them, a one half scholarship each, from the School Health Improve ment. Mrs. Riley White, who fractur ed her arm Saturday while at tending the lamb show in Turner, was brought home Thursday after being treated in the Salem Gen eral hospital. Her daughter, Mrs. Clifford Phelps of Seal Rocks, is with her. Mrs. Floyd Pence and children. Joanne and Richard, accompanied her siMer, Mr. Dorothy Hankin, on a trip east, where they will vicit with their parents and other relatives, in Nofth Dakota. The Mother's dub met on Tues day for the laot time this summer. A survey of different depart ments, revealed a total of approxi mately $150 00 was made for the club at the food sale Saturday at the Turner lamb show. June 12-c.Pi-The first dozen allicc books under the c , cupation translation program have i reached bookstores throughout Ja pan. Two, Lloyd Douglas "The Robe", and former Ambassador Joseph C. Grew's "Ten Years in Japan", were sold out before they reached the shelves. Advance orders for the ' Grew book have exceeded 92.000, and for Douglas' nol 10,000. In all, 40 translations of allied books have been cleared by the translation committee of the Ja pan publishers association. All are I to reach the shops in a few week, Several hundred others have 1 been cleared either on a non-royalty or blocked yen basis. California Couple Visits In Detroit DETROIT Arriving for a three-day visit at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Johnson, were Dr. and Mrs. T. D. Leon from Concord, Calif.
