The object of treat ment Is to keep the patient free from attacks, and today It suc ceeds so well that many can avoid them for periods of months or even years. This disorder Is characterized by attacks in which there is loss or consciousness. When, in addi tion, there are convulsions with spasms and Jerking of th mus cles, tht disease Is known i grand mal epilepsy. If there is only loss of consciousness for a few sec onlds from time to time, the term petit mal is used. Drugs Used Among some of the drugs used for controlling the grand mal at tacks are phenobarbital, dllatin odium, and mesantoin. The prep arations may be given alone or in combination. Of course, treat ment with there drugs must be carried out under the direction of the physician who will decide upon the type of drug or drugs to be used and the exact dose. If the attacks occur often when the drugs are administered, it Indicates that the treatment is not adequate. Along with these drugs, epilep tic patients also need the sympa thetic help of their doctor in solv ing the problems which cause them concern. Chief among these according to Dr. Joseph Fetter man. is the decision as to whether or not they should marry. He feels that in the great maj ority of cases there is no reason to advise a person with epilepsy not has csused some mental disturb to marry. However, if the epilepsy a nee, marriage would appear In advisable. Apparently, the aver age epileptic can live a fairly happy married life. The person whom the epileptic marries should of course, be aware of the nature of the disease so that he or she may cooperate in helping to carry out the proper treatment. Free freaa EpDepey The epileptic also la concerned about whether or not he should have children. If he is normal, other than for the epilepsy, snd Look and Learn By A. O. Gordon 1. Statistics would seem to show that children of parents, one of whom la enU leptic, do not have this disease more often than children ot tws) normal parents. j Another question of conaern te the epileptic is whether or no he should drive an automobile. In general, this cannot be allowed, since there is the possibility thai an attack might occur while driv ing. Such a seizure Would ont only endanger the life of the pati ent but also that of pedestrians and other drivers. i In most cases of epilepsy, the disease does not cause any mental deterioration, and patients with the disorder need not worry about this. The important thing Is for the epileptic to be under; the cars of the physician continually, be cause, with proper use of the available drugs, the attacke may be kept under control ifr entirely eliminated.
