Mrs. Wayne Hadley and Miss Mary Lou, were guests at a reception, dinner and dance in their honor here tonight at the University club. The club members sponsored the affair. A replica of the state capi tol building, carved from Ice and lighted with colored bulbs, deco rated the buffet table for the din- RIVERSIDE, Calif.. April 23-(A Wealthy John E. Owen was fatally shot, sheriffs investigators said today by his attractive divorcee secretary apparently after r spat 'over a gift he had received from Actress Irene Rich. The secretary, Mrs. Agnes E. Gamier. 33, booked on suspicion of murder, was quoted variously by law enforcement officers, but tonight issued a statement deny ing jealousy was involved. She indicated she "blacked out" dur ing the shooting. In New York, Miss Rich4, ap pearing in "As the Girls Go, told newsmen that she was friend of Owen. 68-year-old pres ident of the National Apartment House Owners association, but had had no romance with him. The gift involved, said Mrs Garnier, was a set of cocktail glasses. The shooting occurred at Owen s palatial ranch last night Cattle Ranchers Miss Rich said she and Owen, both cattle ranchers in the River side area, had been acquainted about five years. She met him at cattle shows, went out with him occasionally when he was in New York, she said. The actress d e c 1 a red she wouldn't have married Owen if he were free. Owen and his wife. Florence. Beverly Hills, Calif., were estranged. Miss Rich said Owen had never actually proposed to me in a ser ious way." After a day of conflicting state ments from officers. Mrs. Garnier released the following statement through her attorney, Sam Hous ton Allen: Looked at Glasses "He (Owen) wanted me to look at some cocktail glasses , which he prized very highly and which had been sent to him by Miss Rich. He had been drinking rather heavily. In order to humor him, I shared his enthusiasm for the glasses for some time. "He kept insisting on my ad miring them until it became ap parent to him that I was irked by it all. Then he flew into a rage. "He grabbed the gun off a small table and lunged toward me. From that point on I was unable to tell the officers and I have not been able to reconstruct in my own mind what happened until Mr. Owen had fallen. "I don't recall ever having had a revolver in my hand in my life. I picked up the telephone, called the operator and said: " 'Send a doctor and an ambu lance. There has been an dent.'
