Of course, more important was" the control of milk and water supplies, to make sure that they were pure. It would seem that flies nowa days are important in spread! rut other diarrheal diseases, particu larly what ia known asbacilJary dysentery, and a type known as Shigella infection. . To show that flies could carry this disease, a study was carried out In one county. The towns in the county were divided into two similar areas. One set of towns was sprayed every six weeks with DDT. During this time, the num ber of flies in the towns was t lermined by making periodic counts. If it was noted that the number of flies was increasing, treatment with the DDT was agam carried out, sometimes as often as twice week. The other set of towna was left untreated. Children of both towna were studied carefully by maklnc cultures of the stools for the Shig ella germs, and ar careful study waa made of atl deaths from diar rheal diseases, As the use of the DDT prog ressed, a decrensn in the number of casea of diarrhea) due to Shig ella infection in the treated towna. was noted. 7 " e I ; After a period of time, the treat ed and untreated towns were re versed; that lis, the towns 'previ ously treated were not sprayed, and. in the j other towns, DDT spraying was employed. 1 ' When this haopened. the num ber of cases of diarrhea in the seta of towna was also reversed. In other words, .i the number of flies increased, diarr.iear increased. It would seem, therefore, that there is a direct relationship between the number of flic land the spread of diarrheal ijnfwtidfns. particular ly the Shinelja dvuntery. Everyone should accept, as duty, his part in keeping down the number of fjjie.s. 1 . QI ESTIONS AND ANSWERS . N. D : Wilj you please! tell me something about trichomonas? As usual, her alarm clock had awakened her at 8:30 a.m. As usual, she'd been up until 12:30 a.m. This week, as she's been doing fbr six and a half years, she appears in 10 performances of Ken Murray's stage hit. "The Blackout." And a radio show Monday night. And days in the movie, "My Friend Irnva." "It doesn't aeein to bother me much. I'm strong. Sometime, if I get really tired, I stutter a bit." Director George Marshall calls her "one of those healthy, easy going dames." Marie s day, starting with 8:30 reveille, goes like thin: A glass of letnon juice ut hot water. A she-wer. Breakfast, prepared by heraeif, of twe eggs, toast,, warm milk with a little coffee in it. and four vitamin pills.
