A lay-in by Poetsch after one of the numerous fast breaks that bad found their way through tha sagging Salem de fense all iilght brought the count to 49-4S. No mistage about it, one of the Strongest forts in the Viking make up all season a stiff defense beat them tonight. The hard -romping Roosevelt's time and gain sped through the Salem's with the dangerous 3-on-l and t-on-1 offensive -situations, and too often for the Salem's did they make the surges count for point Also Roosevelt dribblers often faked out the tall defensive "pil lars under the Vik basket for easy lay-ins. Salem has had much bet ter stop-'em nights than they had tonight. Add to this the fact that Keith Farnam, all season long the Sa lem bellringer at the bucket, suf fered unquestionably his worst night and you have ample rea son why the Salem's went down. Tall Keith did come in with 10 points, but be missed lay-ins and other easy shots to the extent that be could have had a 30-point night 'Tfcs a rrvens wrcc!. froa agonizing pain cntO I for.:! UCLA tttwHL PttkM Open Today hands down. Farnam Jnade most of his points in the second half at that and riding with four fouls on him, all picked up in a i whistle-tooting first half. Defense was a minor item most of the game and the Roosevelts, iter spotting Salem a 3-0 lead, galloped up a 15-12 j first quarter lead. Many of the Rdbsevelt points were made on free throws, as the Viks were nicked nine times in the period by the officials. The Salems couldnt close the gap in the second canto, and at one time trailed by 1! seven points, at 30-23. But one of jjthe ever pre sent surges, this on? led by Ben ny Pitzer and Wee! Darrell Gl rod in the final moments of the quarter, had Salem behind only 30-27 at the half. jj Both sides played it hard but cautiously In the thlfd period, and it wasn't until 22 seconds remain ed in the frame that the Vikings, on Tom Paulus lay-up after a sizzling jaunt down the court and a snappy pass from Duval, tied the score at 36-38. Just before the period ended Girodi pushed in a free throw to give Salem a 37-39 lead. I Farnam began warming up at the start of the last frame and his favorite shot a Whirling jump from inside the key!! pushed the Viks to -the front 19-36. But the Roosevelts, easily the best team to come out of Portland to these playoffs in tha i past three years, weren't to be denied. With substi tute Poetsch and tie clever Jim !1 CIcskg On! Winter, one of the three negroes in the Roosevelt lineup doing the point making, they closed it to aonther tie at 40-40. Duval and Pitzer pushed the Viks to a 43-40 lead, but here Farnam fouled out, with 528 left, and Winters canned both free throws. Poetsch and Win ters teamed to push the Port landers to a 46-43 lead as the Sa lem's momentarily sagged. It was obvious that Farnam's rebound work was missed. Doug Rogers, in for Farnam, came through with a one-hander from IS feet, and then with 2:44 left Pitzer wove through the Roosevelts for one of his "impos sible' layup shots and Salem was in front again 47-46. Duval made it 49-47 with his two-hander, as mentioned, with 1:30 left The Roosevelt point in here came as a result of a technical foul called on Pitzer, Winters bucketing the chance. Winters, third high in the Port land scoring race for the season, came in with 19 points to lead the win. Many were gained by mere ly driving through the faulty Sa lem defense. Garrett had 12 and Poetsch, the kid who certainly came thrpug in the clutch for the Teddies, had 11. Pitzer's 14, most of them made as only he seems to be able to make 'em, paced the Vikings. Du val, who played one of his top gomoo jtt the season, hod U Statistically, fouling cost the Sa lems the win. They made 18 field goals to 15 for the Roosevelts, but the latter pitched in 22 free throws to only 15 for Salem. The Vikings were penalized 26 times to 21 for the winners. Both sides missed a dozen free throws. The balance of the opening round, six games in all, gets un der wsy Wednesday morning at nine o'clock.
