There lg a condition, which Is quite frequent in children end often noted in adults, known as epidemic vomiting. The exact tuse is unknown. It is seldom found In infants under six months of ace. It is not unlikely for a child with such an attack to vomit for a period of 24 hours or even longer. On examination, no physi cal disorder is apparent and, as a rule, lollipops, sugar or all-day suckers are all that are needed to clear up the condition. The disorder starts suddenly. occurring most frequently during the months of October and No vember. There Is usually no pre ceding complaint of sickness at the stomach. The patient has an Increased thirst and craves water, but when water is given it is promptly vomited. The vomiting usually stops tn about 24 hours. Following an attack, the patient may feel tired and .weak, and there may be some lack ol appe tite for several days. A Catekiag- AUsmrat It is apparent that this ailment is a catching one, and several members of a family may have the disease at the same time. In many cases, there Is pain In the left lower part of the abdo men. The pain Is mild and does not last very long. As a general rule, the patient does not have diarrhea. In occasional Irurtaneaa, there may be some slight fever for a dsy or two. A small amount of sugar mar be present in the urine of most of the patients. Epidemic vomiting seems to re spond promptly to proper treat ment The amount of fluids given by mouth is restricted to a creat extent. The patients are, however, given plenty of carbohydrates In the form of sugar.Dr. J. Edmund Bradley, of Baltimore, has found the giving of a syrup In teaspoon ful doses, at intervals of from 19 to 20 minutes to be of great help. The patient is given no other preparation. Usually there Is fur ther vomiting after several doses of the syrup-have been administered. Following the Initial treatment with the syrup, the patient is permitted to have such foods as apple sauce, gelatin products. precooked cereals with suras added, toest or crackers, and Jelly. The only fluids permitted for th first 24-hour period are tea and small sips of water taken fre quently, small amounts of cold carbonated drinks art also usta ally well tolerated. After 24 hours, other additions to the diet ari gradually made.! ' QUESTIONS AND ANSWESS A Reader: Would you nleasa tell me fes irmptoira of sugar la the system?
