Eakin, Grass Valley, has announc ed. For the first time, this sale will be held in connection with a bred gilt sale sponsored by the Oregon Swine Breeders association to be held the afternoon of March 2. Several valley men plan to attend both sales. Shew and Sale Planned Plans for the Shorthorn sale call for a showing of animals on March 2 starting at 10:30 aoon., with the auction the following day. Sale time for the consignment of 54 bulls and 23 females will be 12:30 the afternoon of March 3. Eakin reports that animals to go under the hammer have been con signed by 22 purebred breeders from Idaho, Washington, Califor nia and Oregon. Forty-eight of the bulls included in the sale were calved in 1947 or before. The remaining six bulls were calved in 1948. Fourteen of the 23 females are bred. Eight Breeds Represented Twenty-six gilts representing eight different swine breeds have been consigned by members of the Oregon Swine Growers asso ciation to the bred gilt sale, re ports Ben Newell, Salem, secre tary. Seven of the 18 consignors are now or have been 4-H club or FFA members. All gilts to be sold are due to farrow between March 8 and April 20. The animals will be suitable for 4-H or FFA project work as well as for general farm opera tions, Newell says. Banqnet Announced A stockmen's banquet will be held the evening of March 2. The Oregon Shorthorn Breeders association is headed by Claude C. Brennan, Prineville. J. I". Short, Redmond, is vice president, and E. I Woods, Crook .-county agricul tural agent, secretary-treasurer. Make Cions Now And Refrigerate For Later Use The refrigerator vegetable com partment will provide good stor age for small bunches of grafting wood during the next few weeks, according to Marion county ex tension agent D. L. Rasmussen. He suggests that the wood be cut now and stored until the grafts are made. For apples, pears and prunes, the best grafting or cion wood Is ne year old and about the diame ter of a lead pencil. It is usually cut from the outside and upper Crtion of the tree where there s been healthy growth last year. Terminal growth from 12 to 30 inches long is desirable for best dona. Since the middle portion is usually used for grafting, it is all right to cut off the butt and tip ends before placing in the refrige rator, Rasmussen says. The don wood is labeled and bundled and wrapped In several thicknesses of kitchen-type paper T7E UNIT youn Always a Dependable Cash Market. If yon dont bring them to Curly's we both lose. Top Egg Quality Rules Are Given Three main factors govern the production of high quality eggs, says Noel Bennion, extension poul try man. Oregon State college. These are breeding, feeding and care of the eggs after they are laid. Quality of eggs goes down rapidly if they are not properly cared for. They should be gath ered as shortly after being laid a nnssible. Have reeular gather ing hours three or four times an day. Keep the ne?ts as clean as possible and carefully clean the eggs that need it immediately af ter gathering. Portland Produce PORTLAND. Ore.. J3-(ff-Weak-ness in railway stocks, helped send the entire market lower today. It was the fourth overall decline in a row and carried the general price level within a shade of the lowest point in around 11 months. Losses ranged from fractions to an extreme of 3 points or so, some issues hitting new 1948-49 lows. For a short .while in the morning fractional gains predominated. Selling pressure never amounted to much but, in view of cool to frosty demand, was enough to force quotations down all along the line. The poor performance of carrier stocks was linked with the Janu ary .report of Southern Pacific, the first covering operations, in those sections in the central western section of the country which have been pounded by vicious winter weather. Southern Pacific reported Janu ary gross of $40,590,177 against $45,363,292 a year ago. A net op erating income of well over $3, 000,000 a year earlier was convert ed into a net operating loss of about $600,000 for this January. Not since January 1938 has the road shown a net railway operat ing deficit for that month. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks lost .6 of one point at 62.3. On Feb. 11 the price level fell to 62.1, the lowest since March 18. Of the 1947 issues which chang ed hands, 565 declined and only 189 advanced. Aside from one or two flurries of activity, business remained slow. Turnover of 770,000 shares compared with 560,000 Monday, which was a low since October 11. Grain Market Prices Climb CHICAGO, Feb. 23-JPf-A boost in the government buying price for cash wheat provided the back ground today for advancing prices on the board of trade. Wheat and corn both had gains of more than a cent while soybeans spurted as much as 3 cents. Wheat closed s-l'-i higher, corn was 1V4-1 higher, oats were lower to 5s higher, rye was IVi higher, soybeans were unchanged to 3 cents higher and lard was 10 cents lower to 5 cents a hundred pounds higher. Private trade sources said the Commodity Credit corporation was buying wheat at Kansas City as much as 40 cents a bushel over the price for the May future there. That meant a gain of 24 cents since Monday, and followed upon increases in the premium on sever al days last week. Portland Grain PORTLAND. Feb. 23 AP Wheat futures not quoted.
