Soybeans Lead
Sharp Climb;
Grains Follow
CHICAGO. Feb. 14 -(- Soy
beans led a sharp advance In all
commodities on the board of trade
today. At the finish all bean con
tracts were up 10 cents, the daily
limit, with bids in the pit and
nothing offered.
Grains mixed early in the day,
but tagged along when beans
started their rise. When beans hit
the limit advance, buying orders
spilled over into other pits and
the. grain advance gathered mo
mentum. Wheat closed 5 to 6 cents high
er, corn was 24 to 54 higher,
oats were 1 to 3 cents higher, rye
2 14 higher and lard 63 to 73 cents
a hundred pounds higher.
While grains are still well un
der their prices of several weeks
ago,, they have made substantial
recoveries from the extreme lows
touched during the forepart of the
session last Wednesday. Compared
with those lows, wheat closed to
day 17V4 to 21 4 cents a bushel
higher.
Market Quiet;
Prices Steady
NEW YORK, Feb. 14- (P) -Stocks
took a rest today in a quiet
market with prices just a shade
on the higher side.
An early recovery movement
faded out in late trading with
quotations dropping back small
fractions at a time.
Nevertheless, the performance
of the market as a whole was re
garded as a demonstration of re
sistance to the generally down
ward movement experienced most
of last week.
The market was the narrowest
and trading of 700,000 shares was
the lightest of any full session
this month.
The Associated Press average of
60 stocks which remained un
changed at 62.1, the lowest the
average has been since last March.
Limited Demand
Noted for Hops;
Price Range Wide
PORTLAND, Feb. 14 -4JP)- A
limited demand for hops plus a
wide range of prices were report
ed for the month ended February
12.
The department of agriculture
said a few spot cars of Oregon
hops sold In a range of 25-30 cents
a pound. The top price was
brought by good quality seeded
clusters with less than 8 per cent
leaf content. Fuggles brought 25
28 cents.
The unsold 1948, crop in Ore
gon was estimated at 8,500 bales,
about 4,100 of them fuggles.
The department said the 1949
crop was getting contracts at 50
cents a pound for seeded clusters
with not over 6 per cent seeds and
8 per cent leaf and stem.
