Jan. 3MP-In one f the quietest stock markets in nearly four months, prices slipped lower today despite the efforts of some leading issues to push ahead. It was a day of small changes with eighths being added and sub tracted here and there in a mixed pattern. Steels kept their head above wa ter some of the time but ended down by fractions to around point. Motors did better and clos ed unchanged to higher among the leaders. Rails and utilities were mixed in a narrow range with rails off slightly on average. Bund ing shares, aircrafts, oils, and re tail and mail order stores were down. As a result, prices slipped- Traders said it did not appear that the govern ment bought much cash grain. Wheat closed 4-s lower, corn was H- lower, oats were Va low er to 4 higher, rye was to 1 cent higher, soybeans were I4-1V4 lower, and lard wan 1 to 13 cents a hundred pounds lower.
