Prices pivoted on the steel group where much of the day's limited activity centered. The market never fully recov ered from losses incurred during the first hour of busines. Shortly after the opening U.S. Steel lost as much as 1 and Bethlehem 1. Selling soon spilled over into other groups. A bottom was quick ly reached but a couple of feeble rallies sputtered out before they ever worked up any steam. Volume of 840,000 shares was even with Thursday and about on a par with recent sessions. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks dipped .3 of one point to 64.9, fifth setback in a row. The loss put the market back to the level it held two weeks ago.
