St Paul's Episcopal church in
The Dalles was the setting lor the
marriage of Mrs. Josephine Fer
guson Russell and Floyd Colburn,
both of Salem, on Wednesday
morning at. 10 o'clock with the
Rev. E. Ernest Tayler officiating
at the double ring ceremony. The
altar was banked with white
snapdragons and tapers.
For her wedding the bride
chose a smart sapphire blue taf
feta suit with beaded pockets and
three-quarter length sleeves with
cuffs. She wore a flowered halo
hat with blue veiling and navy
accessories. She carried a pray
er book marked with a white or
chid. Mrs. D. H. Noonan of Seattle
was her sister's honor attendant
and wore a navy blue faille suit
with flowered hat and carried a
pastel nosegay. Nancy Jo Rus
sell, daughter of the bride, was
ring bearer, and wore a light blue
embroidered organdy frock trim
med in eyelet lace and pink rib
bons and a matching hat. Gordon
Akers of The Dalles, brotherin
' law of the groom, was best man.
Mrs. Lenore O. Ferguson of
Seattle attended her daughter's
wedding in a three piece grey
suit with flowered hat. Mrs. Fred
Colburn was unable to come west
from Humbolt, Kansas for her

now underway to assist the farm.

cious rich pies. Unless of course from other pastries or candy.
Now take pecan pie, for instance, the filling alone contains. 3588
calories and the crust adds a good many more.
Here then, is a pie guaranteed to
add inches to an already ample
waistline.
PECAN PIE
1 Vz cups dark cornsyrup
1 cup brown sugar
V cup butter
Va teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1 cup pecan meats
Cook cornsyrup and brown su
gar together until mixture begins
to boiL Remove from heat .and stir
in butter, add salt, cool. Beat eggs,
add to syrup mixture, pour filling
into unbaked shell sprinkle with
nuts and bake at 350 degrees for
50 minutes or until done.
Now that coconut is again avail
able, this pie might tempt the ap
petite of those who should be
watching strictly to a low calorie
diet

On the social agenda Wednes

contingent was the preview show
ing of Carl Hall's water colors in
the Elfstrom Gallery. Mr. Hall
and Mrs. Norman Huffman, ad
visor of the gallery, were present
for the showing.

H. G. Maison, who hava taken
over the management of the gal

pote filled with pink sweet peas

The watercolors will remain In
the gallery for ten days and will
be open to the public beginning
today.
Auxiliary Plans
Benefit Party
Members of Capital Unit No. 9,
American Legion auxiliary, are
planning a benefit card party for
Friday. February 4, to be held at
the Salem Womans club. Bridge,
pinochle and whist will be played
with prizes for high and low score
for both men and women. Mrs.
Lena Hildebrandt is general chair
man and will be assisted by Mrs.
Don Madison and Mrs. Walter L.
Spaulding in charge of playing,
and Mrs. Ella Voves serving as
refreshment chairman.

these chairmen and also Mrs.

Hape Jaonith. daughter of the
Douglas Jaquiths of Salem, was
one of the 34 young music students
who participated in auditions in
Portland Sunday. She and three
oth-rs earned the right to be beard
by Werner Janssen for a possible
solo appearance with the Portland
Symphony. Miss Jaquith is a vio
linist, and music major at Lewis
and Clark college.
Mrs. David Easea will present
her pupils in a musicale Sunday
afternoon at 3 o'clock at her South
Church street home. Soloist on
the program will be Miss Patricia
Elfstrom. pupil of Miss Lena
Belle Tartar, who will be accom
panied by Miss Dorothy Pederson.

2 eggs, separated
1 teaspoon vanilla
Vt cup shredded coconut
Baked sheU
Put the corn starch, salt and 1
cup of the cornsyrup into a sauce
pan. Stir until blended. Add but
ter and milk. Heat to boiling over
direct heat and boil gently IVi
minutes, or until mixture becomes
thick and clear, stirring constantly.
Beat egg yolks; gradually add hot
custard and blend thoroughly. Re
turn to heat and continue cooking
1 minute. Add vanilla- and coconut.
Pour into baked pie shell. Beat
egg whites until stiff but not dry.
Gradually beat in the remaining Vi
cup corn syrup. Spread meringue
over top of pie, carefully sealing
in all the filling by spreading so
that meringue touches all edges of
crust. Bake in slow (300F.) oven
about 25 to 30 minutes, or until
lightly browned. Serve cold.

St. Joseph's
The double ring wedding of
Miss Delaine J. Hougham; daugh
ter of Mr. i and Mrs. E. R. Hough
am, and Floyd J. Green, son of
Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Green was
Saturday morning. January 15 at
10 o'clock in St. Joseph's Catholic
church. Father Bernards officiated
at the mass and read the vows
before the high altar. Wayne
Meusey presided at the organ and
sans:.
The bride, who was escorted to
the alter by her father, wore a
gown made of white slipper satin
with yokej and sleeves of shadow
lace, fitted bodice and a gathered
skirt which terminated into a court
train. Her I finger tip veil was held
in place by a coronet of orange
blossoms. ;She carried a mother
of pearl rosary more than fifty
years old and a white bridal man
ual, a gift from the groom, top
ped by an orchid.
Miss Dolores Hougham, twin
sister of the bride, was maid of
honor. Her dress was sea foam
green and she carried a nosegay
of roses, sweet peas and snap
dragons. Miss Gloria Hougham,
another sister of the bride, was
bridesmaid She wore a pink slip
per satin - gown and carried a
nosegay of roses, sweet peas and
snapdragons. Judy Abernatha,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wil
liam Abernatha of Portland, was
the flower girl wearing a floor
length yellow gown.
Mel v in Green, brother of the
groom, was best man and Lee
Kronbergbf Portland, uncle of
the bride, escorted the bridesmaid
Ushers were Robert Green of
Newport and Robert Kronberg of
Portland.
Immediately following the cere
mony a reception was held in the
Blue room at the American Le
gion club. : Miss Tove Jacobsen of
Eugene and Miss Faye McPhee
served. Mrs. William Abernatha
of Portland poured. Mrs.-JW. D.
Potter and Mrs. T. Cover had
charge of the gift table. Miss
Irene .McPhee passed the guest
book.
The bride's mother wore a dark
afternoon dress enhanced with
bugle beads, Kolinsky furs and
black accessories. Mrs. Green
wore a light green suit with black
accessories and both had corsages
of gardenias and red roses.
For going away the bride chose
a black and grey sharkskin suit
with cape collar, black accessories
and a fur coat to which she pin
ned an orchid. The couple will
make their home in Salem on re
turn from ; their honeymoon.
The Woman's Bible class of the
First Methodist church will hold
its class party Friday afternoon at
the home of Mrs. James W. Taylor,
882 N. 16th St., at 2 o'clock. Assist
ing hostesses will be Mrs. Oren
Strafton and Mrs. Zero Polaire.
Mrs. Lena Lisle will lead the devo

Lang ford, wore a blue suit and a
corsage of red roses. Mrs. Leonard
Loyd was her sister's matron I of
honor and she wore a .brown; suit
with a yellow ranuculus corsage.
Leonard Loyd acted as best man.
The newlyweds greeted their
guests at a reception following
the ceremonv. The bride received
her education in Texas while JlrJ
nori is a graduate or inaepend-i
ence high school and Oregon 1
ztate college, lie is now employed
by the Skelley Oil company as a
geologist at San Angeio, Texas,
where the young couple will lve.
