Add but ter and milk. Heat to boiling over direct heat and boil gently IVi minutes, or until mixture becomes thick and clear, stirring constantly. Beat egg yolks; gradually add hot custard and blend thoroughly. Re turn to heat and continue cooking 1 minute. Add vanilla- and coconut. Pour into baked pie shell. Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gradually beat in the remaining Vi cup corn syrup. Spread meringue over top of pie, carefully sealing in all the filling by spreading so that meringue touches all edges of crust.
