Directors of the chamber learned from past president James Walton and Chandler Brown that the two Salem men are under considera- tion for appointment to a game commission term beeinninc next month. It uas understood the opening is to be filled from the Willamette valley area but that Salem has not had a member of the commission for seveial years. The chamber board also went on record favoring adoption of the Columbia basin project, including the Willamette river project, as now drafted by the army engineers in this area. President RpyiHar land and others of the chamber expect to attend a regional hearing on the project February 2 in Port land before a board of engineers for rivers and harbors from Wash ington, D. C. The bill is headed 7ohn Turner to David Leslie, Dr." and bears the date of January 28. 1843. It shows the price of commodities at that time. Among the entries are: 4'i yards of Broadcloth at $27, 1 pair shoes $2.00 and 1 hair comb $1.00. 235 marriage permits were granted during 1891. A Madstone. J. B. Long exhibits a madstone with a history. It is the only one in the state. It is a very signi ficant looking stone about 1 inch wide and IV2 inches in length of a black color and porus on one side. The stones are said to be very useful for other purposes than hy drophobia. It is valued at $300. In 1892 the Dome with grace the Capitol. 3 The Fire Alarm System Sold. Yesterday Thos. Hol man purchased and took charge of the Salem iFire Alarm Co.'s system of fire alarm boxes. This system now consists of a dozen boxes, but a considerable increase in number may be expected. Mr. Holman an nounces it as his purpose to extend the service until the entire city is covered with alarm boxes. The suit was brought by a group of fishermen on the river against the state fish commission and Ar nie J. Suomela, master fish war den. Plaintiffs charge the law, passed at the last November elec tion, is unconstitutional. Defendants moved for a court order striking from the complaint reference to the initiative petition for the law." It is alleged the peti tion has nothing to do with the suit.
