Robert E. White, PMA grain supervisor, Portland, told commit tee members that 14.1 per cent of 17,444 federal grain samples taken in Oregon, Washington arid Idaho during the 1948 harvest season graded smutty. An identical smut figure was registered on samples from the 1947 crop. Infestation Increases" Short cuts in seed treatment for smut are responsible for much pf the. disease spread, believes Rex Warren, Oregon State college ex tension farm crops specialist. A member of the smut control committee. Warren states that smut Infestation on two popular Oregon wheats-Elgin and Alicel -took an alarming jump in 1948. There was some improvement in hard red winter and common white wheats to offset the smut increase in the two white club varieties. Smuty wheat in the northwest was at an all-time low in 1942 when just 2.8 per cent of the fed eral samples graded smutty. Condoa Is Sore Spot - The shift to more nonresistant wheats such as Aliel and Elgin in Oregon has aggravated the smut problem. Warren states. In four Columbia basin counties Wasco, Sherman, Moro and Gilliam 34 per cent of the 1948 Alicel and Elgin's samples graded smutty. In 1947 samples from the same wheats were 2S.2 per cent smutty. At Con don which was this area's sore spot in the 1947 smut picture, there was decided improvement in the 1948 crop. Warren points out. The Pendlteon inspection district, which includes Union and Wallowa counties, showed a similar increase In smut on the two white club varieties. These wheats graded 23.5 per cen smutty in 1947; 32.9 per cent smutty for the 1948 crop. Un ion county was particularly hard ait. ' Grain Market Moves Higher CHICAGO, Jan. 19 -(P)- Grains, soybeans and lard today turned In a performance which has be come a rarity in the past two weeks: Everything moved higher -and final prices were the best of the day. The market took its cue from lard, which finally found a rest ing level at least temporarily after several straight days of inking to new seasonal lows. Wheat closed -lVs higher, eorn was Ts-IVs higher, oats were -lH higher, rye was 2 to 2V higher, soybeans were 3 to 3Vi higher and lard was 25 to 35 cents a hundred pounds higher. A slight pickup in foreign flour business helped wheat. The Unit ed Kingdom completed purchases of 18,750 long tons overnight. Hol land requested mills to offer flour for shipment during the first 1949 quarter with acceptance expect ed tomorrow. riilh Is Only He Per Pound Ton Can't Even Boy NECK BONES for That Price AND ... in milk you get 100 food value No muss, no fuss, no preparation expenses - - - It's the Cheapest, Most "Nourish ing Food You Can Buy.
