December 23, 194$ I mi&iJi SOCI ETY - CLUBS MUSIC Miss Wade 'Announces Betrothal Taking the romantic spotlight to day is Mis Corinne Wade, tall at tractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs Trancis T. Wade, whose parents are announcing her engagement to Bichard H. Kuhn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry V. Kuhn of Portland. No plans have been made bjr the engaged duo for the wedding. Friends of Miss Wade learned the romantic news when they re ceived Christmas packages in the mail, a miniature engagement box with a ring and a card bearing the names of the couple. Miss Wade is a graduate of Ore gon State college and her sorority is Chi Omega. She is also an active member of the Salem Spinsters. Her fiance is a senior at Oregon State college and a member of Del ta Tau Delta fraternity. Eastern Star Gives Party Chadwick chapter. Order of Eastern Star, held their annual Christmas party Tuesday at the Masonic Temple following the re gular meeting. Several hundred members and visitors attended the session, presided over by the worthy matron, Mrs. G. A. Ree her and worthy patron, Herman M. Johnston. Mrs. Paul H. Hauser, past worthy grand matron and Milton L. Meyers, past worthy grand patron of the grand chap ter of Oregon were honored in the east, A degree was given by the of ficers honoring the retiring ma tron and patron. A large class of candidates who have become members of Chad wick chapter during 1948 were in troduced. 4pk Suzanne Howell played accor dion solos and Mrs. Merl Stewart sang Christmas songs, accom panied by Mrs. Mildred Flagg. Following the program a large beautifully decorated Christmas tree was unveiled and gifts dis tributed by Santa Claus. Mrs. . E. Bergman was supper chairman, Mrs. David Looney and Mrs. C. O. Wilson were hostesses. Mrs. D. M. The crowning ceremony was conducted by Alberta Chapter, Order of the DeMolay of Portland. Barbara An derson sang solos and Dorothy Pe terson played the piano in a group .of solos. Carolyn Eckersly Is retiring sjueen. Group singmg and dancing fol lowed the ceremony. Jim Wikander of Portland and Dave Genz of Wausau,, Wise were guests of Dick Whitely from Thursday until Saturday. Friday night 16 members of the boys' fraternity met at the Joseph W. Chambers home in honor of Eric Carlson who married Miss Arlyn Sheldon Saturday. Golden Wedding For Warners Mr. and Mrs. Elijah Warner will celebrate their golden wed ding anniversary at their home on Hollywood drive Saturday, De cember 25. They are inviting friends through the press to call between the hours of three to five o'clock. Ida E. Stafford and Elijah War ner were married, on Christmas day 1898 near Vincennes. Indi ana. They came to Salem in 1925 and moved to their present home in 1930. Their children are Miss Edris Warner of Bellingham, Wash.; Bern ice Connell. Denver, Colorado; Everett, Yuba City California; Dorothy Warenr, Kan sas City, Missouri: Eldridge, Stra ford, New Hampshire; Louis, Lu cile and Emmett of Salem and Neil of Portland. They are ex pecting the entire family home for the occasion. Marriage of Couple Told Announcement Is being made of the marriage of Betty Lou New man, daughter of; Mrs. William Wadel and Robert Chester Van Eaton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Van Eaton, all of: Salem, which took place on December 14 at Stevenson, Wash, at 5:30 o'clock. The young couple left Friday for San Diego where they will visit with his sister, Mrs. Eileen Van Dyke. Mr. Van Eaton is in the coast guard and has been sta tioned at Iwo Jima the past four teen months. He will bo attend ing . aviation school after Decem ber 23. Gardners Hosts To Club Group The home of Mrs; George Gard ner was the scene f a Christmas party when she antertiined mem bers of her club. Holiday greens and candles provided the decora tive note. After cards a late sup per was served by the hostess and a gift exchange. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Wo elk, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Andre sen, Mr. and Mrs. XJoyd Thomas, Open Houses Are Slated Two more holiday at homes are to be added to the list of yuletide parties. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Eyerly have invited seventy-five of their fri ends to an informal Christmas open house on Sunday afternoon at their country place at -Flying E ranch. Calling hours are from 2 to 6 o'clock and a buffet supper will be served by the hosts. Clever invitations were in the mail Wednesday to a New Year's eve at home for which Mr. and Mrs. Fred C. Cast will be hosts at their Manbrin Gardens resid ence. They have bidden their fri ends, including several from out-of-town, to call after 9 o'clock. A Birthday Party Mrs. Albert Lindbeck will be honored on her birthday tonight when her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Riches entertain with an in formal party at their Ben Lomand park home. Miss Lewis To Wed on Friday A bride of the Christmas season will be Miss Barbara Lewis, daugh ter of Mrs. George E. Lewis and the late Mr. Lewis, who will be married on Friday afternoon, De cember 24 to Lewis Alfred Apling ton, son of Mr. and Mrs- Gordon Aplington of Portland, formerly of balem. The nuptials win take place st the Lewis home on North Winter street at 2 o'clock with the Rev. A. J. Jordon officiating. Mrs. Samuel R. Orr (Florence Lewis) of Port land will be her sister's only at tendant and Herbert Aplington will stand with his brother as best man. Only members of the two fam ilies will witness the exchange of vows, but additional guests have been invited to the reception to follow the ceremony. After January 1 the couple will be at home in Salem. Miss Lewis and her fiance at tended Salem schools and he also attended school in Portland. Out-of-town guests here for the wedding are the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Shurtx of Redwood City, Calif., formerly of Salem, and Mr. and Mrs- George Hilton of Council Bluff, Iowa, who have been visiting at the Lewis home for several weeks. Tuesday night Miss Lewis was feted at a pre-nuptial shower when Miss Neoma Phillips and Miss Alice Perrine entertained at the Lewis home for thirty of the bride elect's friends. Visitors to Arrive For Holidays Each day brings more news of holiday visitors arriving in the capital for Christmas. Miss Connie McKay, daughter of Mrs. Stanley McKay and sister of Mrs. Gale Besse, arrived in Sa lem Tuesday morning by train from Albany, N.Y., where she has been visiting her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Leahy (Stella McKay) for sev eral months. Miss McKay will be at the Royal Court apartment of her mother for several weeks, af ter which she will leave for her home in San Francisco. Miss Isabel McGilehrist Is ex pected to arrive in Salem today from San Francisco to spend Christmas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James McGilehrist. She will be here a week. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Moore of Ashland will spend the holidays in the capital with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Moore, arriving today. Miss Ann Lindle of Portland will also come today to be the holiday guest of her brother-in-law and sister, Dr. and Mrs. Carl W. Emmons.
