YMCA in a combination meeting.

lieutenant in Salem's army reserve corps in a meeting- of the corps
Monday night. Capt Richard Reynolds, regular army instructor for
the Salem reserves, administers the oath. The commissioning cere
mony took place in a meeting of the 369th engineer boat and shore
regiment and QM headquarters 409th engineering brigade. Rhoades
will be an officer of the reserve ordnance department-

Marion county Junior Red Cross
members have undertaken many
projects for the holiday season,
reports Mrs. M. K. McCann, gen
eral chairman. Nearly 200 mem
bers represent 41 elementary
schools and three high schools.
The JRC members at Keizer
school have made 730 Christmas
tray favors for the Veterans' hos
pital at Roseburg, under direction
of Mrs. Arthur Weddle. The favors

will be filled with candy and nuts
by other JRC members.
At Bush school, where Mildred
Wyatt is in charge, JRC members
have made tray favors and boxes
filled with home-made cookies for
patients at Salem Memorial hos
pital. These are to be delivered
by children who will sing carols.
Parrish junior high school JRC
members, under Mrs. Doris Ran
som, will deliver Christmas gifts
to residents of the Cottage home.
At Leslie junior high, with Eleo
nor Roberts as teacher, the JRC
prepared Christmas gifts to be dis
tributed at the Tracy convalescent
home. This group also assisted
with the bangle pin work for the
annual Christmas seal sale.
All JRC units in the county have
filled gift boxes for children over
seas, and provided gilts for the
veterans' hospital at Roseburg.
Moreover, 54 boxes have been
shipped overseas for children. .

to spend a 10-day furlough with

Sundlie was graduated from
Salem public schools and attend
ed the University of Oregon for
two years before entering the aca
demy. He is a member of the
school's swimming team.
SALEM HIGH SCHOOL
Alumni of Salem high school will be welcomed
during the annual Christmas and Homecoming pro
gram in the school auditorium at 1:30 p. m. Wed
nesday. Rollin Coking, student body president, will
open the program with a welcome to the alumni,
Tom Bartlett, class of 1947, will give alumni recog
nition.
The program also will include
a skit by the Girl's league, a con
cert by the Salem high choir and
chorus directed by Lena Belle Tar
tar and community singing with
the orchestra, chorus, and audi
ence, directed by Victor Palmason.

"Christmas in Art and Music"
was presented at Parrish junior
high Tuesday evening by the
school orchestra and choral groups.

LESLIE JUNIOR HIGH
Girls from West Salem, Parrish
and Leslie junior highs held a
"play day' at Leslie Saturday. In
the morning they chose teams and
played volleyball. They ate lunch
in Leslie cafeteria and then played
games and danced in the after
noon. Lucille Wilson, physical edu
cation instructor at Leslie was in
charge of the event.
Ninth graders held a Christmas
party Friday with dancing, movies,
games and floor show throughout
the evening. The 20-piece Leslie
dance band under the direction of
Raymond Carl furnished the mu
sic. Mary Jane Rudd was vocalist,
fifth Period Volleyball Team Wins
Leslie's volleyball tournament
ended last week with the fifth
period team winning the cham

State - wide festivals of folk
dancing for the early spring are
to be planned Monday and Tues
day in Portland by the executive
committee of the newljr organized
Folk Dance Federation of Oregon,
headed by John H. Black of Salem.
The federation includes the two
clubs from Salem and others from
Corvallis and Portland, with other
groujjs starting to join. Salem's
clubs are named the Gate Swing
ers for those who are experienced
at the art (meets first and third
Saturdays), and the Capital Folk
sters, for beginners, who meet se
cond and fourth Saturdays.
The groups get together at the
YMCA, with newcomers invited to
participate. The Gate Swingers al
so have an additional meeting each
month, the next of which will be
January 6 at Mayflower hall.
Officers are John Geialer and
Mrs- Geisler, president and secre
tary - treasurer, respectively, of
the Gate Swingers, and Mary Swe
gart, president,, and Nancy Craig,
secretary - treasurer, of the Folk
sters. State officers, in addition to
Black, are Byron J. Beattie, vice
president; Sue G. Doran, secretary;
and Mae Quinn, treasurer, all of

ization are to encourage enjoy
ment of international folk dancing
and related arts, to promote
friendship and tolerance, to en
courage research in dance forma
and make available patterns, to
assist in forming new dance groups
