Chemicals Up
Stock Prices;
Split Proposed
By Rader Wlnget
NIW YORK, Dec. 20
Chemicals boosted the stock mar
ket out of a narrow range today
aodinf average prices slightly
A lata up trend started when
DuPont directors proposed a four
lor ona stock split DuPont jumped
nearly nine points and closed up
t at 179.
Subject to stockholders approv
al at a meeting April 11, the split
will become effective about June 1.
At the same time Allied Chem
ical gained 4 at 179, on the pos
sible theory that it was in the
high price range where splits are
logical.

Wheat Closes
Higher After
Shaky Opening
By William Ferris
CHICAGO. Dec. 20 -iJP)- Wheat
ended with a show of strength on
the board of trade today after
shaking off some early faint-heart-edness.
The bread cereal closed
with gains extending to a cent,
giving the best performance of all
grains.
Corn and oats ended with small
losses. They reversed the action of
wheat, staring off linn and then
sliding' late in the day. Action of
three major grains indicated there
may have been some switching of
positions by local traders.
Wheat closed td 1 cent higher,'
corn was '- lower, oats were;
lower, rye was -l high
er, soybeans were lower to 2V3 j
nigner and lard was 10 to 37 cents

Major prop for the wheat buying
was a decline in receipts of the
cash grain at most terminals.
Wheat prices have fallen back be
low a point where it is profitable
to redeem wheat under the gov
ernment loan and sell it in the free
market, grain men said.
The game of quoits apparently
originated along the borders of
England and Scotland in the 15th
century.
