Grains Give Highly Erratic Performance CHICAGO, Dec. 16 -P)-Grains gave a highly erratic performance on the board of trade today. Wheat slid lower throughout the session while corn held firm and closed with moderate gains. Soybeans and lard ended with both small (ains and losses, showing no con sistent trend. The firmness of corn followed upon reports the emergency food committee of the FAO council had removed all coarse grains and rye from quota restrictions. In addi tion, license controls were lifted en shipments of corn and rye to western hemisphere countries and the Philippines. Wheat met persistent selling from commission houses and little or no commercial demand devel oped. Some worry over future congressional appropriations for European recovery has been roused by charges of the econo mic cooperation administration that three European countries have been misusing these funds. Wheat closed "i-l4 lower, corn was unchanged to i higher, oats were unchanged to Vi lower, rye was 4-lV4 lower, soybeans were 24 lower to Vi higher and lard was 10 cents lower to S cents a hundred pounds higher. Gold Market Proves Active NEW YORK, Dec. 16 -JP)- De mand for gold issues gave a boost to stock trading today. While the general level of stocks quietly declined, gold issues mov ed up fractions to around 2 points. Buying interest in the golds ap peared in the stock and curb mar kets here, as well as in the Toron to exchange, which is Canada's big market in mining shares. A check of the financial district disclosed considerable divergence of opinion over the sudden broad interest in such stocks. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks declined .1 of one point to 64, the fourth slight dip in a row. Of the 1,061 issues which appeared on the tape, 481 dropped and 298 advanced. Volume of 1,010,000 shares com pared with 920,000 yesterday, which was a three-week low. Curb volume totaled 230,000 shares, against 260,000 Wednesday.
