Pensions Top
Legislative
TAims of Legion
Pensions, national security and a
boost in payments to disabled vet
erans and to veterans' dependents
axe top. items on the American
Legion's congressional agenda, it
was learned here Thursday.
A list of legion national object
ives, voted at the Miami conven
tion, was received by B. E. "Kel
ler" Owens of Salem, Oregon de
partment commander. The Miami
conclave also adopted a streamun
ed $3,500,000 budget.
The legion will seek congression
1 action on raising payments to
disabled veterans and to widows
of veterans and their dependents.
Other objectives are relief in vet
erans housing problems, and a
pension plan.
The national department of the
Legion also favors legislation call
Jng for military' training, enact
ment of an anti - communist bill
similar to the , Mundt-Nixon bill
and for continuation of tha con
gressional un-American activities
committee.
East Salem Family Has
Holiday Dinner Party
EAST SALEM Mr. and Mrs
William Judson entertained for
Thanksgiving dinner this year at
their Salem home on Sunday
Present were Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Wood, their son Howard and their
house guests, his nephew and wife,
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Wood from
Palm Springs, Calif.
Guests at the B. E. Braucht
home on Garden road for the day
and holiday week end were Mr.
and Mrs. Eugene Braucht and
two sons and her sister. Miss Ina
Freeman of Bandon who is a
teacher in the schools there.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Larkins
drove to Molalla Thursday for
the family dinner at the home of
bis sister and brother-in-law, Mr.
and Mrs. I. N. Dunrud.

former foreign correspondent, will
address the Salem : Chamber of
Commerce during Monday noon's
forum-luncheon. His topic is "Can
China Survive?"
For 15 years he was correspon
dent in Asia and Europe for the
London Daily Mail, Life and Time
magazines and the Columbia
Broadcasting system. He is author
of "Behind the Iron Curtain," and
"As We See Russia."
Moorad was graduated from tha
University of Oregon and went to
China to work for the "China
Press" ia 1932. He: later became
city editor of the ''Shanghai
Times," managing editor pf the
Santa Cruz Daily Sentinel and ia
1940 director of Information of the
American Red Cross.
As a war correspondent from
1941 to 1949, Moorad was at Guad
alcanal, New Guinea, London, It
aly, France and Germany. While
chief of the Columbia Broadcast
ing system in Moscow, he . was
with the Red army in Rumania,
Poland and Finland: His last as
signment was to cover the first
atom bomb test at Bikini.

Troop Forms
VALSETZ, Nov. 25 Formation
of Boy Scout troop here sponsored
by the Valsetz improvements club
has been announced this week by
he Cascade area council headquar
ters office in Salem.
A cub pack also is being formed
by the improvement club, accord
ing to its, president, Mrs. Vernon
Poole. The pack is expected to get
under way within a few weeks.
Louis E. Robinson is scoutmas
ter and Eugene Fowler is assistant.
The troop now includes 15 boys.
John Richardson is chairman of
the troop committee. The troop
meets each Monday night at the
Valsetz school.
10 Children Eacape
Injury as Car Capsizes
VANCOUVER, B. C, Nov. 25
(CP)- Ten children miraculously
escaped injury Wednesday when
their kindergarten station wagon
overturned after a traffic collision,
rolled three times and stopped on
its side against a telephone pole.
Five-year-old Teddy Izen and
Mrs. Arthur Kelly were the only
ones treated for minor bruises. The
other children clambered from the
overturned wagon unharmed.

Business Loan Totals
WASHINGTON, Nov. 2S-4)-A
$15,000,000 decline of business
loans by Federal Reserve banks ia
the nation's leading cities during
the week ended Nov. 17 was re
ported by the Federal Reserve
board today.
The decline was a contrast to
the better-than-average increase
of $163,000,000 the previous week,
which had carried total commer
cial, industrial and agricultural
loans of the leading city banks to
a record high at a time when the
stock market was selling off
sharply.
