Nov. 24-Twu the month before Christmas,' but Eilverton churches this year have decided to keep in step with Silverton merchants and start their yuletide preparations in time. f . Already choirs are at work on cantatas and special music Pastors Ee setting the hours for their Christmas sermons. Decorations are be g planned and Christmas boxes have left for far away; places and others are being packed for or phanages and homes nearer at band. . From Calvary Lutheran church a Christmas box left a short time ago to a missionary home in Mada gascar. Another is being packed for the children's home at Paulsbo, wash. The Calvary Sunday school under the direction of Olga John on, will give a program Thursday December 23 at 7:30 p rn. The Rev. James A. Tofte will give his Christmas sermon at 11 ajn. Sat urday Decerber 25. There will be special music by choruses now practicing, programs Arranged At th Methodist church, with Hw electric organ just installed, a full Christmas already has been planed. The choir, under the direc tion of Felix Wright, with Mrs. A J. McCannel as organist, has start ed practice on the contata "On wing of Angels' Songs," by Ira B. Ben F, Browning will give his Christmas ermon at 11 o clock. Under the direction of Mrs. Harrison Fischer, the young people of the congrega lion are working on a pageant to p given sometime during the Week preceding Christmas. A food cffering is being prepared for the Methodist home at Salem. M. B. Ford, Sunday school sup- rlntendent at the Christian hurch, is preparing a program to given during the holidays. On , unday, December 19 the Rev. Lrihur Charles Bates will give its Christmas sermon at 11 o'clock. 1 he choir will also give cantata during the holidays and work on this will start next week under the direction of Mrs. Lester Hage, With Gary Ickstad as accompanist. A Christmas offering will be made fof the old people's home at Beav trton. Special Mnsle Set The Rev. M. J. ICsFuhr at Trln- church will give a sermon at ajn. Christmas, with special music by the choir under the di- on of Mrs. Robert Webb, with Alfred O. Nelson at the organ. The choir will also assist at the Sunday school Christmas program to be given Sunday, December 26 at 8 pjn., with Mrs. L. A. Meyer, Mrs. M. J. K. Fuhr and Mrs. M. G. G under son arranging the program. A special night will be set aside for caroling and a choir Christmas party. Christmas bundles for Eu rope left the church Wednesday of this week, and further Christmas gifts from Trinity will go to the Seattle Seaman's home and the Parkland Children's ' home at Everett, Wash. Because of dedication plans for the new organ and the reconstruc ted church, Christmas plans are not complete at Immanuel. There will be Christmas day services at 11 a.m. by the Rev. S. L. Almlie. The Sunday school Christmas tree festival program Js yet to be ar ranged. Special music is being dis cussed by the choir director, J. Dyrud, and the accompanist, Mrs. Herman Gottchalk. Mrs. Arthur Dahl, director of the junior choir, is also planning special music Three Masses Set The Rev. J. J. Walsh announces that there will be confessions on Christmas eve from 2 tb 5 and 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at St Paul's Catholic church, with three masses, one a high mass, on Christmas day. Other Christmas plans are yet in making. The Rev. G. T. Brat void will give the Christmas sermon at the Christian and Missionary Alliance church on December 1.9. A special Sunday school program, under the direction of Mrs. Arthur Pederson, will be given at 7:45 p.m. that date. Patrick Campbell is chairman of the 1848 drive and Robert Brow nell in charge of the repair divi sion. Last year the club took over the program from the city fire department, repairing and turning over to the Salvation army more than 1.000 toys for distribution to needy kiddies. Four repair groups are headed by John M. Ritchie, Sid Boise, Ot to Skopil and Robert White. William Phillips, jr., Exchange club president, announced collec tion stations this year will be lo cated at Loucks Home Fuel Oil company, 1710 N. Commercial st.; Marion Motors. 333 Center st.; In terstate Tractor company, 3055 Silverton rd.; the business office of the veterans' colony and at any Richfield gas station. Persons wishing to contribute toys may also have them picked up by calling the Willamette Val ley Transfer company, 2-3624. Members are busy each Tues day, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights repairing the toys at the Alan A. Siewert Construction company warehouse, 1260 Howard st., the central collecting station. By their volunteer labor, members are repairing, repainting and re storing broken toys to attractive gifts for Salem's poor children who would otherwise have no Christmas.
