The season's inaugural poll, which drew ballots from 153 sports writers from coast to coast, was a tight two-way battle between Notre Dame and North Caroline, with Northwestern an impressive third. North Carolina collected 55 first-place votes, five more than Notre Dame, and 24 second-place votes to 23 for the Irish, j But the third place votes 29 for Notre Dame and 21 for Carolina put the Irish on top- , On the usual basis of 10 points for a first-place vote, nine for second, eight for third, and so on, Notre Dametallied extactly 1,200 points as a result of its narrow victory over Purdue land last, week's 40-0 walloping of Pittsburgh. j Michigan, which finished second at the end of the; 1947 season but swept past Notre Dame into the No. 1 spot in a special poll after the Rose Bowl game, landed in seventh place in today's p0ll. In fourth place was Southern Methodist, with 13 votes for first and a total of 882 points, the Mustangs finished third in 1947. Army, which barely missed the top ten in last year's final balloting, placed fifth today with seven first-place votes and a point total, of 725. Georgia Tech was sixth with 598 and Minnesota ranked eighth with 407. " California's Pacific Coast conference -favorites landed in ninth place, with three first-place votes and 399 points. Penn State, which was fourth at the end of the 1947 season, barely made he first 10 with 305 points, although it received two votes for first. Credit for contin uing labor-management cooperation and wise ue of labor pools in large measure belongs to Portland's Labor-Management Committee, functioning in Oregon's industrial heart Nine year ago local labor and manage ment determined to "live and let live." The result was a strong committee representing both, which during the last year alone prevented threatened strikes in five major industries. International heads of unions have sought the committee's advice in working out coastwise and nationwide labor problems, and in addition, it has fostered a program of accomplishment beneficial to the entire state.
