The July contract advanced more than 2 cents a bushel in the last, fifteen minutes of trading. Traders said the disturbing Eu ropean situation caused some who old in the early part of the day to buy toward the close. May wheat also closed strong. Corn, however, could not gain against reports of an outstanding crop. Reports to traders said that yields of a hundred bushels or more would not be uncommon in Illinois, and that the corn crop Is now considered out of danger from frost. At the finish wheat was to S higher than Saturday's close, December $2.23-. Com was to 1 lower. December $1.35 to 38. Oats were higher to Portland Produce c PORTLAND. Sept. The heaviest trading was in the first and final hours when the dip in prices was the most pronounced. i Brief rallies were attempted during the day but business dried up until the appearance of the next selling wave, j The Associated Press average fon 60 stocks declined 1.6, the larg est loss since July 19, was closed at 65.9. the lowest point since April 14. Rails suffered the stif- fest set-back with! a loss of 1.9 while industrials were off 1.7 and utilities .6 of a point. There were 1,074 issues traded in the broadest market singe Aug. 11 with 851 declining and only 79 advancing. ( Habeas Corpus Writ Denied to State Prisoner A petition for a writ of habeas corpus for Claude Kenneth Castle of Dallas was denied by order of Circuit Judge E. M. Page Monday. Judge Page had taken under ad visement arguments on the peti tion heard August ( 20. Castle al leged he is illegally imprisoned at Oregon state prison where he was sentenced in 1941 from Polk coun ty on an habitual criminal act. . Judge Page found that Castle was not in ; prison unlawfully. Castle had alleged that no grand jury habitual criminal indictment had been entered against him and that no Jury tried his case.
