Whi vacationing in San Francisco we attended the opera, "La Traviata presented by the San Francisco Opera association, now in its 26th season . . . The setting . . . the War Memorial Opera House . a gorgeous building and something to see in itself . . . The building covers an entire block "with sep arate entrances with canopy for carriage and taxi . . . The build ing lighted outside at night . Handsome interior with wide foy er and corridors ... A dome ceiling with grand lighting effects . . . comfortable deep red plush seats ... . Just like a parade be tween, acts to see the beautifully gowned women stroll in the base ment promenade for buffet serv ice . . . The buffet a grand idea and certainly refreshing . . . The stars ... This being our first grand opera we were most impressed . . . Gorgeous stag settings and the costumes so col orful ... .. Licia Albanese, the Metropolitan Opera star, sang the role of Violetta ... most appeal ing to the audience . . . her char scterizations managed to be vivid and fragile at ;once ... Special mention on her beautiful gowns ... in the first act she wore hooped skirt white dress with many ruffled tiers, off-shoulder and handsome diamond and -em erald jewelry ... In the ball room scene of the third act her gown of black velvet highlighted with design of brilliants and irri descent seouins . . . this dress also hooped and at the opera ball she wore an ermine stole over her whit gown . . . and mention to Jan Peerce. who was if redo. Schunk. the former Ola Schweizer, who was married in Salem on September 15. The bride Is the daughter of Mrs. P. M. Schweizer of Mon mouth and her husband's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Albert G. Schunk of Hepp ner. The newly married couple will attend Oregon College of .Education this winter. (McEwan photo). BROOKS Word has been re ceived here of the marriage of Ruth Sidebottom Hlnkle, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Sidebot tom, and William R. Ross, son of Mrs. Elsie Ross of San Francisco. The ceremony was read by the Rev. Leonard L. Patterson, in the Presbyterian parsonage in Den ver, Colo. The bride attended grade school in Brooks and high school in Ger vais. The groom is a graduate of Hartland high school of 'Milwau kee, Wisconsin, and served six and one-half years as an aviation, me chanic ! The young couple will live in Denver. In the center a beautiful garden . . . with buildings on all four sides ranging from the audi torium to opera house . . . Cer tainly must have been a sight dur ing the United Nations conference, when all were, in use and flags of all nations flying from atop each building and around the garden square . . .
