WU- Merchants to Protect Against Taxi Stands f Two taxi controversies, meters and use of stands, will boil over at Salem's city council meeting Monday night, it developed Sat urday. Protest by a group of North High street merchants that the parked taxis and often idle driv ers constitute a nuisance to their business and to potential cus tomers will be voiced before the council by Elmer Amundson, lo cal attorney. The seven stands were set up July 13. The meter problem arose over a complaint, to be ' presented Monday night by E. T. Barrett, operator of Eddie's DeLuxe Cab Co., that the city's other cab firms are operating with illegal meters. Both his cabs were taken out of service, last -Monday after ona of his drivers was arrested by city police on a charge of operating without a meter. The council is expected to con sider also a new proposal regard ing vacation of three alleys in the two blocks to be occupied by a new trading center at Capi tol and Center streets. The plan would call for an exchange of property deeds which would en able the city to place a north south alley through the blocks from Center to Union street.
