De Santis Advised On Action in Try to Open Logging Road The Marion ii county court Sat urday advised Albert DeSantis. Silverton log hauler, that he must institute -proceedings through his attorney jo reopen temporarily an access road to timber in the Sil ver Falls area: DeSantis told the court he and six other haulers have about 2,- 000,000 board f feet of timber to haul from the area. The access road, county road 880, has been closed by a landowner, William Smith. A suit seeking to open the road is now .being processed by the Marion county circuit court. I Uebelman, Salem, route 5, currently on a vacation-business tour of Europe, writes from Switzerland of conditions on .the continent. In a letter to The Statesman, Uebelman reports that many peo ple in Austria, where he had just visited, .were without food and clothing. "Many women and children have less to eat than our poorest Americans." He added that go ing from Austria into Switzerland was like going into another world. Sclonu OrogorL OCE to Offer arten Teacher Qass MONMOUTH, Aug. 14 In auguration of a kindergarten training program this fall at Ore gon College of Education will make it possible for a student to secure an Oregon elementary school teaching certificate and a kindergarten certificate as part of the same program without having to -attend an out-of-state school. Heretofore it has been necessary to recruit kindergarten teachers from Washington and California to staff Oregon schools. The new kindergarten Is de signed to serve as a model for similar programs in the Oregon school systems. The room was de signed cooperatively by the archi tects, teachers and administrators and will include heated floor., por table furniture, covered play porch, private entrances, fireplace and private toilet facilities. The lighting, ventilating and heating are being designed in accordance with modern scientific findings. Mildred Kane, assistant profes sor of education and present kin dergarten and first grade supervi sor at the college training school, will direct the new kindergarten. Miss Kane has been a kindergar ten teacher in the Portland schools, served as director of in service training in the federal nur sery schools Vancouver, Wash, and initiated the kindergarten pro gram in that city. She has a mas ter of arts degree in early child hood from Teacher's college, Co lumbia university, and Is doing special kindergarten work with Prof. Roma Cans of New York at the present time.
