Two Cities Music and Shakespeare Festivals to Attract Throngs to Oregon Cities By Maxine Boren Woman's Editor. Tha Statesman Two small Oregon cities. Hood River and Ashland, are using their talents and efforts to produce exceptional festivals this August. Straying 'ar afield from the regulation promotional celebration, which goes distinctly commercial local product (vegetables, fruits, cotton, hops or what-have-you). Hood River is producing an ela borate Music Festival and Ash land will continue her annual Shakespearean Festival. Hood' River's festival this year August 5 to 8, will b her first, but for five years, under the lea dership of Boris Sirpo, the city has had this festival in mind. The whole city is cooperating; mer chants are aiding, householders are opening homes to guests of the city; women's organizations will feed the crowds expected. A former Salem woman, Jeannette Scott, is assistant to Mr. Sirpo. Ashland's festival is older, hav ing been started in 1935. Begin ning August 11, the Festival con tinues three weeks, with each play being repeated during the series. This festival is conducted in an outdoor theater in beautiful Lithia park, in much the same manner as in FJizabethian times. The Hood River Music Festi val is near at hand, and plans are pretty well completed. Five con certs are scheduled, four of which Sirpo will conduct. Hood, where a beef barbecue will be served Sat urday, Sunday is expected to be the big day, and plans are for dinner between the afternoon and evening concerts. These two cities are certainly to be respected for their efforts to produce something of worth by way of civic festival. It is hoped that Salem folk will attend at least one of the two affairs. A meeting is being held tonight at 8 o'clock for interested per sons, at the studio of Lena Belle Tartar, 158 South Liberty street, when Jeannette Scott' will outline plans.
