SOCIETY CLUBS MUSIC Visitors Are Many in "Capital There are many interesting visitors in the capital this sum mer with parties arranged in their honor. Mrs. Freda Livesley of Van couver,' B. XZ. is spending a few days in the capital and is a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad W. Paulus. Friday afternoon a group of Mrs. Live sley's friends honored her at luncheon at Silver Creek Falls lodge. Covers were placed for j Mrs. Uvesley, Mrs. Paulus, Afrs. Reynolds Allen, Mrs. Robert Her rall. Mrs. Chandler Brown 1 and Mrs. Werner Brown. Miss Frances " Roth, who has been visiting in the capital with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theo dore Roth, the past fortnight is leaving today by plane for Los Angeles, where she is engaged in civil service work. Miss Roth returned to the states the first of the year from the Hawaiian Islands, where'she had been en gaged in the same work for sev eral years. Martin, alid Arthur M. Meola, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Meola of Newark, New Jersey. The Rev. Louis White performed the 3 o'clock nuptials. Mrs. Edmond Meola sang and Mrs. Ronald Craven was the organist. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Tweed ie and Freddy have completed a Ihree weeks vacation with rela tives in California. They visited the J. H. Tweedies, former Salem people, at San Rafael; with Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Jantze (JoAnn Tweedie) in Oakland; at Man hatten Beach with ' the Gordon Reeds and in San Diego with Mrs. Tweedie's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. Brown. Miss Leah Case returned re cently from a three weeks vaca tion trip during which she visit ed her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Reed of Manhattan Beach, Calif. Andrew Coleman with the groom as best man and ushers were Bud Stevenson, Ford Forester, Eugene, William Holtand Harry Hougen. For her daughter's marriage Mrs. Martin chose a pink crepe gown with silver sequin trim and cor sage of white gladiolus blossoms centered with pink rosebuds. The groom's parents were unable to come west for the rites due to illness. A reception followed in the fire place room. Presiding at the bride's table and assisting were Mesdames Fred Loveioy of Taft, Frank Martin of Eugene, Dan Hiem, Woodland, Wash., Ellen Jordan, Otto Lehman. Misses Rita Morrisbn, Marlene .Roller, Helen Cadd, Diane Meola. The newlyweds went south to Los Angeles : on their honeymoon and for traveling the bride wore a tobacco tan suit with beige top coat, cocoa hat and accessories and corsage of orchids. Mr. and Mrs. Meola will live in Salem in theirs new home on Vaughn ave nue. Mrs. Nora Scott of Topeka, Kansas has been visiting in the capital with her sister-in-law, Mrs. . Olive Adams, and Mrs. Florence Shipp. Mrs. Scott's sis ter, Mrs. Everett Carey, and niece, Mrs. Nina Marsh, pf Port land, came down to Salem to join her for several days. Serine Optical Sweetheart Is Chosen Carolyn Slocum, 1947 sweet heart of the Sigma Chi chapter on the Willamette university campus, has-been selected along with five other Sigma Chi sweethearts to attend the national Sigma Chi con vention in Seattle late in August. She was chosen from 100 sweet hearts representing chapters throughout the United States. One of the six will be crowned the na tional Sigma Chi sweetheart. ( Judges were Steve Hannigan, re porter; John Wayne, movie actor; and Milton Caniff, cartoonist, all Sigma Chi members. The corona tion will be on August 28 at the Olympic hotel in Seattle, conven tion headquarters. Miss Slocum Will be a sophomore at Willamette in the fall and is a Pi Beta Phi. A number of Salem men plan to attend the sessions. Hostesses Fete Miss Meyers Miss Marilyn Quamme and Miss Jeanette Scheidel were hostesses for a surprise bridal shower to fete Miss Betty Meyers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Meyers, whose marriage to Nick Weiss will be an event of -July 31 at St Joseph's Catholic church,. The miscellaneous shower was at the home of Miss Quamme's parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. .J. Quamme. Family Picnic Honors Visitors A croup of relatives fathered at the Dallas city park on Thurs day of this week for a picnic in honor of the Webb N. Beebe family of Escondico Calif. They have been visiting j Mr. Beebe's sister, Mrs. Jack Hayes of Dallas and other relatives in Salem. Mr. Beebe attended high school at Dallas, took pharmacy at Ore eon State college, was employed in a drug store in ; Dallas for a time and is now owner of his own store in Escondico. He is president of the chamber of com merce there. Mr. and Mrs. Beebe, their son Duane and daughter Nylene are taking their vacation through Oregon. Two more couples have added their names to -the engaged ranks. Miss Elsie Johns, daughter of Mr. and ' Mrs. C B. Johns, and John W. Dixon of Portland, son of Webster Dixon of Portland, have announced their engagement and the date for their ' coming marriage. The couple's wedding will be an event of September 5 at the First Presbyterian church with a recep tion following at the Johns home. Miss Johns is a graduate of Sa lem high school and has been at tending the University of Oregon. Her fiance will enter the Univer sity of Oregon law school in the fall. The couple will live in Eu gene and. she will also continue with her studies. Salem Man Engaged Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Hill of PenT dleton are announcing the betroth al of their daughter, Lois, to Al Da hi en, son of Mrs. Augusta Dahlen of Salem. No date has been set for the wedding. Miss Hill graduate this spring from the University of Oregon, where she was affiliated with Al pha Omicron Pi sorority. Her fi ance attends the University of Oregon and is a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. There are currants, all the cane berries and apricots to can. Local Rochester peaches, apples and plums to eat in sauce or out of hand. Vegetable displays are equally colorful and interesting. White radishes, fresh corn on the cob, green and yellow butter beans. Use cup for cup of sugar and fruit for currant jelly or pre serves.
