m I The Statesman. Salem. Oregon, Wednesdays April 21. 1948 Contrary to the belief that Sa lem has never lost an opening WIL ball came, we're sorry to re port that In 1942, the season the Solons lured those mostly curious and certainly brave 26,000 cus tomers into the Waters arena, the opener went to Tacoma, 5-2. Oth er than for that one, the lnsngn rals co like this: 1940 - - Salem 11, Yakima 10. 1941 - - Salem 9, Wen atebee 4. 1946 - - Salem 8, Spo kane 5. 1947 - - Salem 4, Vancou ver 2. The other recent coaching shift, Jiggs Burnett from Wood burn to West Linn, has unques tionably cost the Willamette Val ley league one of its top mentcis. Jiggs has done a fine Job In his five years with the Bulldogs, and has long been- deserving of a, erack at more money and a larger school. The result evened the two-game series at one win each. hands teed off for 15 mostly solid base hits, while the Salems were gleaning a scant five, all singles. The Vic win stopped the Sena tors at two straight wins but failed to pull them from the league lead, a perch they now possess along with Vancouver's Caps. The teams go at it again tonight at 8:15 o'clock, and it will be Lefty Cal Mclrvin making his first mound start for the Solons, against Fastballer Len Kasparovitch, a member of the 1947 Victoria crew. Mclrvin will have nine right handed batters to face, incidental ly. There is a dire shortage of southpaw swingers on Norbert's nine. Sidearmer Vince Lazor, the No. 1 flinger in the league last sea son with his 18-6 record, was no puzzle at all for the A's last night. Vince had about as much stuff as he has had spring training little more than nothing and the Vies whacked at him merrily for the three frames he toiled. He yielded nine hits in all and three of the Victoria runs. Five of those bin gles came in the Vic second, good for two runs. Three more came in the third for the other tally off Lazor. Rookie Jim Olson, spectacled righthanded who saw service in the Cal-State circuit with Visalia last year, went the next six heats, and for other than one run on three hits in the ninth, he exhib ited stuff and savvy enough to insure his job with the Wilcnnc Victoria got six hits off Olson, but oniy me one run What Olson lacked on the hill and it certainly wasn't much he made up for at the dish. A left handed rapper at 220 pounds, Big Jim belted two of the five Salem nits, and both were kissed solidly oeyona me lniield. Ulson s performance was about the only thing nice about the out ing, although the Bud Peterson- to-Al Spaeter-to-Jim Wert com Dine clicked for two sparkling double plays which kept the ene my from scoring more runs. Pete started 'em both and looks as if ties a 100 per cent better fielder than he was last year. But alas, 'tis about time Portland called him back for shipment to a higher league, for Mel Nunes' wounded knee is okeh and he's ready to go. Hits by Archie Wilson, Charley Balassi, Bob Koraleski, Pitcher Del Owens and Frank Cirimile in the second brought the two-run woe to Lazor. In the third Jake Palmer, Wilson and Koraleski hit for the third tally. Salem could do little with Starter Owens for three heats, but in the fourth he walked Al Spae ter and Joe Gedzius, and it cost him a run. Dick Sinovic dropped a single into left to score Spaeter with one out, but some Class X base-running by other gents oc cupying the sacks ended the in ning long before Sinovic could catch his breath after reaching first base. The Solons sent Owens out in the fifth when another walk to Jim Wert, Olson's first single and solos by Peterson and Spaeter were good for one run. The rally looked big, but Joe Blankenship, an old Vitoria reliable was rushed in by Norbert and he responded brilliantly. He yielded exactly one hit, by Olson in the seventh, the rest of the way. The locals were hitting the ball all right, but not very hard. The Victoria infield had 21 assists sans a bobble, and altogether the visi tors appeared to be a young outfit very capable afield and ditto at the dish. Second-sacker Cirimile, with Ventura of the Cal-State loop last year, and Shortstop Palmer, with Denver at the same time. each belted three hits. , Dean Abney Handed Semi Mix Winner of his last three fights, and being brought along gradu ally by Matchmaker Tex Sal keld, Salem's Dean Abney gets a promotion on the next fistic show at the armory. Then Wea ver tied the count with his pet "neck breaker" after tricking FJ Phantom into the backward fly ing mare. Weaver was going for this hold again in the third chap ter when the Phantom caught him with the vicious head butts. The semiwindup went to a fall- apiece draw between Frankie Hart and George Dusette. Dus ette's full nelson won the opening fall in 27 minutes. Hart put across his rolling toe hold to tie it with 12 minutes to go.
