Withholding Tax Repeal Sought hy Candidate Scott State Treasurer Leslie Scott, precluded by statute from filing for another term in that office, entered the race for the republi can nomination to the governor hip Friday with the following statement; "If I am nominated and elected I will, during my term of office discharge to the best of my ability and experience, the responsibilities thereof, and promote the progress and prosperity of our people. I urge maintenance of the high credit of the state; repeal of with holding tax; restoration of income tax exemption of $750 (now $500) continued rejection, at this time, of general sales tax; ade quate salaries and retirement for public employes; sympathetic re gard for wages and employment; ample educational facilities; aid to war veterans; intelligent adminis tration of public welfare; exten sions of electric power; promotion of varied Industrial and recrea tional resources; law enforcement. Other subjects will be Included in later discussions." Scott's ballot slogan is: 'Now state treasurer, member board of control, knows Oregon affairs." Indus try and population are moving into the northwest and creating a new industrial empire. The ques tion is whether we have the vi sion and leadership to avoid the old industrial pattern of slums, poverty and vice and to create a new empire preserving the best in western business enterprise and the security and spaciousness of typically western homes. The fu ture f Oregon will be written by our present answers to such typi cal problems as housing, indus trial 'smog' and stream pollution, seasonal unemployment and the control of vice." His ballot slogan: "Veteran and business man known for his abil ity, liked for his friendliness."
