By Jerry Stone Johnny Lewis' hard - running Willamette basketeers roared to their seventh Northwest confer ence victory last night and tight ened their hold on the loop's se cond place slot as they turned back the Pacific Badgers, 54-40, on the local court. The preliminary saw Marv Goodman's capable Bearcat Frosh edge out the Pacific Jayvees, 31- 90 Last night's varsity fracas was close only through the initial 10 minutes. ;At the midway point in the opening half the Bearcats showed a 17-13 advantage with Guard Tom Warren the spark. At that juncture Bob and Jim John son combined with Bob Medley and zoomed the count up to 29 18 at the intermission mark. As the second heat was launch ed Ted Johnson and Medley each chipped I in with a bucket and charity toss and Bob Johnson fol lowed I with a two-handed Jump shot to swell the locals' margin to 38-16.; From then on it was ob viously no contest, with the Lewis crew boasting a near 20-point ad vantage ; the remainder of the way. Bob and Ted Johnson paced the Willamette attack with 12 points apiece, with Ted and Med ley standing out for the 'Cats in floor and backboard play. Medley counted : 10 points himself. Big Jim Johnson had one of his poor est evenings of the campaign, hit ting for, but seven markers. (Herb) Ponnock. one of the greatest lefthanded pitchers of all time, died today after a cerebral hemorrhage. The former New York Yankee, Philadelphia Athletic and Boston Red Sox mound star, rounding out his flfta year as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, collapsed as ho entered the Waldorf -Astoria hotel to attend a National league meeting. He was rushed to the Mldtown hospital, where ho died an hoar later. The slender, gray-haired Pennoek, who began his major league pitching career 38 years ago at the age of 18. and who racked up 245 victories over a 22-year span. Including five without a defeat In world series competition, would have celebrated his 84th birth day February 10. Although he never carried more than 188 pounds on his frail looking six-foot frame, Pennoek was one of the most durable pitchers of his time. He reached the peak of his playing career during the 11 seasons bo performed with the Yankees and the senlth was attained when he saved the world series of 1923 for the Bronx Bombers against the New York Giants by pitching three times In four days, winning two games. Four years later he sot a series mark which still stands when ho pitched 7 ',4 consecutive Innings without allowing a runner to reach first base. "Slats" GOL astute Oregon State coach, came up with a modified man-to-man defense that checked big Jack Nichols, scoring terror of the northern di vision, and his teammstes long enough to enable the Beavers to pile up a commanding lead in the first half, 37-22. A late-minute relapse almost undid the Beavers. They held a 68-53 lead with IVi minutes to go and both Gill and Coach Art McLarney of Washington sent In reserves. The Washington subs caught fire, however, and with Vx min utes to go cut the Oregon State lead to 66-63. By that time first-stringers were back in and the Beavers stalled out aided by two free throws and a field goal by Norm Carey, who was high scorer for Oregon State with 22 points.
